1941: BEFORE THE WHITE HORSE CIRCLE

This familiar intersection is very familiar to me. The intersection in the photo is completely unfamiliar to me. I can honestly say I do not recall Route 206 merging with South Broad Street at the White Horse Avenue (White Horse - Mercerville Road). How very rural we were back when I was 8 years old! I must admit that I don't even remember this intersection 10 years later when I was a senior at HHS and often traversed South Broad Street.

HI TOM....I RECALL THE WHITE HORSE BOWLING ALLEYS IN THAT LOCATION AND CHARLEY FOX THE OWNER EXPANDING THE PLACE TO INCLUDE MANY MORE LANES AND A COCKTAIL LOUNGE. HE WAS A BIG HELP WHILE WE HAD THE OLDEN BOWLING ALLEYS IN THE 50'S. BEST REGARDS.

Didn't that bowling alley burn down? And didn't they have a shooting there, in the new much larger one, maybe even fatal? I think I bowled there when I came back to McGuire in 67-69, when I lived in Yardville and on Gropp's Lake.
They had free bowling there, before their official opening. I bowled 19 games...plan was to bowl until I got my first 200 game. Game 19 was 199 and I had a blister on my sliding toe...so quit/gave up.
My last game there, was Oct 13, 1959, 275. Still in the little brown book from Ralph's Hamilton Lanes scoring booklet. :)
Great picture Tom. Thanks.

Hi, I should have said my last game in the old lanes ... since I enlisted the week after that 275, in 1959.

I do in fact recall this interesection traveling to the late, great Seaside Heights. The big white building seen at the corner of White Horse & South Broad later became the "Sizzler" steak house. The wooded area on the left of the photo was developed as a town house community. further on down Broad St. towards Lakeside, was the Ireland (?) pre school.

Mike,

I don't think that's the White Horse Hotel/Sizzler in the picture. I am pretty sure that the future Sizzler is located just to the left of the Stern's billboard. In the picture, you'd be standing on 206 coming from Bordentown looking straight ahead to White Horse Ave. The Stern's sign is on Broad St. right next to the Sizzler.

Those houses I think are on White Horse Ave. heading towards Arena Drive. I believe the first house is gone and is now part of the Taco Bell property. The second house just beyond, with the higher roof, is still on White Horse and is the first house after Taco Bell.

Sorry all, I meant Swern's instead of Stern's.

THAT SHOOTING RON HAPPENED AT WHITE HORSE WHILE FRANK AGABITI, TONY GENOAY AND A FW OTHERS WERE BOWLING AND SOMEONE TRIED TO ROB THE PLACE. THE CROOK WAS KILLED AND FRANK ESCAPED THROUGH ONE OF THE WINDOWS, AS I RECALL.

The White Horse Hotel, later known as Gropp's Tavern is not in the photo. It is to the left of the Swern's sign. There are numerous photos of the area in other posts. To the best of my knowledge, the house in the photo is just an ordinary White Horse residence; I believe it still stands today, behind the vacant lot which is today's Taco Bell establishment.

Wasn't there a drive up burger joint directly across from White Horse Bowling Lanes? Maybe even had mini golf? Recollections around early 60's on the way to where else, Two Guys.

I always used to hear that the crook shot and killed one of the guys at white horse that night who tried to stop him. They never found the murderer. Does anyone know the true story or know how I can research it?
