1907:THE EARLIEST "TRENTON CATHOLIC BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL?

Chambersburg was developing rapidly by the first decade of the 20th century as more and more immigrants came to America. Above is the story of the Immaculate Conception School which was dedicated without the usual fanfare.Below is an engraving from my collection showing the church which I believe is an architect's rendering of the edifice. Note the twin spires which were not included in the final construction. I have found no news articles that Immaculate was the victim of heavy storms as was true in so many other churches in the area; therefore I speculate that the architect drawing included twin spires even as the original architect drawing of St. Anthony;s church also had spires that were not included in the construction.

I would venture a guess that Ralph Lucarella knows a number of students from this photo. There's very popular Hamiltonian Ed McManimon directly under the "1936" in the photo, there's my favorite Trenton Mayor, Art Holland. Don Foy, who operated Foy's Fountain on South Broad Street for many years.

This was the last coed graduating class from Immaculate Conception High School. The following September, Immaculate beame an all boys high school and in 1938 was renamed Trenton Catholic Boys High School. St. Mary's Cathedral High School became an all girls high school in September 1936.

Just below the picture of the future Trenton mayor, Arthur Holland, is that of my dad's first cousin, Grace McGarigle. Grace joined the Sisters of Mercy and was known as Sister Anne Cecilia. She was later a teacher and principal at Sacred Heart grammar school in Trenton.

I NEVER FOUND OUT WHY HE HAD THE NICK NAME OF CHIRP BUT THAT WAS WHAT HIS FRIENDS CALLED HIM. ANOTHER FRIEND FRED SORRENTO, BE CAME A PRIEST AND TAUGHT AT TRENTON CATHOLIC FOR MANY YEARS. 1936: IMMACULATE CONCEPTION HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS...

Immaculate Conception High School presented "The Seal of Confession" with the cast shown in the graphics above. My favorite 8th grade Kuser School teacher, Margaret Gaydos is in the back row, upper photo, under the letters "MA." I looked in vain for former Trenton mayor, and my favorite mayor Art Holland, and the closest I could come to a younger Art was the young man in the upper photo, first row, third from left.

Well Tom, I"m looking for Art(Chirp) Holland's photo. You know someone else I can't see on that team, Gil Rossi, and also the Kelsey boys from Revere Ave. 1936 was a very good year, even for FRank Sinatra, We also had Dick Gray, Leo wolf and many other outstanding people going to Immaculate in the late 30s. Villa Park and Chambersburg residents gave all the local schools many star players to round out their teams.

1938: PLANNING A DANCE FOR IMMACULATE CONCEPTION BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL

Herewith a photo of the movers and shakers involved with a dance for the ICHS boys at the Greenacres Country Club back in the Spring of 1938. I see the late Lillian Pimlott Newbanks, former Trenton teacher who went on to become a parishioner at St. Anthony parish in the 80's and 90's. She was a friend of St. St. Anthony Associate Pastor, Father Francis McGrath.

Hi Tom: That is a nice photo of my friend Art Holland. We were teamates on the Southards baseball team at that time. His brother Joe, also in the photo, was a County Freeholder and of course Art became one of the better mayors for the city of Trenton. They were living on Tyler Street at that time and joined other Chambersburg people in sharing political problems of the area. Best regarda
