1914: EWING TOWNSHIP'S LATE, LAMENTED LANNING SCHOOL

When I wrote this column back in 1988, I was invited to the celebration of the founding of the school. I met many of the Ewing folks I was acquainted with while I was working in Ewing at my old dead end job at the Trenton Bearing Company on North Olden Avenue Extension. I was very impressed with the condition of that classic school house. It was immaculately maintained. The school is no longer there but the building is occupied as an office building.

1936: LANNING SCHOOL, EWING NEW JERSEY

I see my former boss, Ed Gainsborg in the photo, along with Bill Disbrow, whose brother George worked with me and the aforementioned boss at Trenton Bearing Co. back in the 1950's. Also in the photo is Lloyd Ruch, who went on to be the founder of Ruch's Tire establishment on North Olden Avenue Extension in Ewing.

Unfortunately, there are pathetically few visitors to this site who are over the age of 70. Equally unfortunate is the fact that those in that generation would find much of the posts on this site to be "historic treasures," as one old timer who took the time to learn how to surf the web put it in one of my guest book entries. However, we must learn to live with the fact that these newfangled computers are too difficult to learn for some, and focus on the fact that what is being preserved here will be available for future scholars and others who are interested in our local historical heritage.

1934: EWING TOWNSHIP'S LANNING SCHOOL

From the EWING TOWNSHIP folder, this combination of an old architectural drawing of the proposed new Lanning School with the listing of students of the school with perfect attendance during November, 1934. I have highlighted my Sister in Law, Florence Adam. There are many familiar names in the school. Ed Gainsborg was my boss during my years working at the old Trenton Bearing Company at 1812 North Olden Avenue.

1938: EWING'S LANNING SCHOOL

Reading through this list of students at Lanning magically took me back to 1952 when I began working at what would become a dead end job. I see two of my fellow workers at the old Trenton Bearing Company on No. Olden Avenue in the list: The late Bill Kuestner, and a fellow I still see to this day at Central Baptist Church in Ewing, George Disbrow. There are so many other familiar names: Hollis Wyks, Cal Steepy, and many other old line Ewing natives.

Undoubtedly my Brother Bud and Sister in Law Florence Adam Glover will know many of these graduates. There are a number of old Ewing names in the class. I was surprised to see Edward R. Gainsborg, my boss at the old Trenton Bearing Company on North Olden Avenue at Parkside; the beginning of my "dead end" career.
