2011: WE GET LETTERS. THANK YOU!

It is really nice to know that many of the posts on this blog are touching visitors in so many different, positive ways. Anyone who remembers the 50's when Perry Como had that delightful variety hour on TV will remember the segment where the Como chorus sang, "Letters, we get letters, we get stacks and stacks of letters...Dear Perry..."

We also get stacks and stacks of letters. Here are a only a few. More will be published ummm, to borrow the title of one of my sing along songs, "AS TIME GOES BY!"

**********

Thanks Tom Glover, for the Hamilton/Trenton area historical postings.

Excited to search for pictures of places !

Hello, I am Lou Kocsak's granddaughter. I wanted to thank you for your post regarding his camera shop, Lou's home movies. How very nice to read. Thank you again, Tami Scully Savino

I attended Mercerville School in the late 50's-mid 60's (K-6) I was wondering if there are any class pictures ?

I'd like to thank you for your website. My father Tommy Mangine played for the Trenton Eagles and now I have a picture of him in uniform.

#621 9/27/2011, 12:33:51, PDT Karen EAGLE Moman: Please, do you realize you have some WWII pictures on this site that has a 50 star American Flag? Please, get this corrected. Look at a 48 star flag (as flew over our country in WWII) and look at the 50 star flag. The stars are placed in a different manner. I keep seeing this all over the web. It is disgraceful. Our citizens fought an died for that 48 star flag and someone is out there putting a 50 star flag on WWII posters and letters.SHAMEFUL

For Karen Eagle Moman #621: Get over your indignation. If you follow this man's website than there is NO WAY you could ever call him or his material, "shameful" or his presentations, disgraceful. If Tom made a mistake, then that is what it is, a mistake. He is one of the most respectful and patriotic men that I know. Shame on you for your e-mail.

Warren Rue

(TOM REPLIES: NO MISTAKES WERE MADE. THE AMERICAN FLAG IS THE AMERICAN FLAG WHETHER 13 STARS, 48, 49, 50, 51 52....)

Also, the home page graphic does not extend across the entire screen. The images would be larger and easier to see!

Thanks!

Tom, Love your new home page, but one problem. The caption at the top of the picture, second from the left, can't be seen. Yellow lettering on the light sky is hard to read. Thanks!

While working on my family's genealogy, I found "family lore" that states: 'Henry Burem (Boerum) was born in 1758 at Half Way House, Mercer Co., NJ'. I surmise that is was a stop over point on the road through Mercer County, but am unable to find any definitive detail. Can you shed any light on its location and or other detail?

Born in Mercerville, Hamilton Twp 1946 and I enjoy reflecting on a better life back in the olde days of NJ

Tom - just looking in and reviewing some great, old places in Trenton and Hamilton Twp (HHS) that I used to hang out in and had great fun with my old HHS buddies. Thanks for keeping the site current.

About Clay Street picture.

John & Robert were before me but i knew their families well. Picture looks like late 1930s.

About 12 homes on Clay Street were torn down to make way for the freeway. Lewis Street was also cut off at the same time with homes torn down also.I remember walking across the RR bridge on my way to THS before it was closed. Clay Street was a grand old neighborhood.

2010: I HAVE BEEN MODIFYING THIS BLOG

This is "Holy Week for me and Roman Catholics all over the world. I have chosen this graphic from the "NOSTALGIA" folder which is quite apropos.

NOTE: I HAVE RESTORED THE INDEX FEATURE TO THIS BLOG. IT CAN BE FOUND ALONG THE RIGHT OF THE PAGE, WAY WAY DOWN AT THE END OF THE LINKS AND IS HEADED LABELS.
THE INDEX IS FAR FROM COMPLETE. WITH 4,000 PLUS PAGES, I ESTIMATE THAT I HAVE INDEXED ONLY ABOUT 5 OR 600 PAGES. I ALSO TWEAKED THE BLOG WITH A SPRING-ORIENTED HOME PAGE. THESE LITTLE TIME CONSUMING EFFORTS ARE THE REASON I HAVE BEEN A BIT LAX IN POSTING NEW MATERIAL. TO COIN A PHRASE FROM COLONIAL TIMES, "I BEG YOUR INDULGENCE."

TO ACCESS THE "ARCHIVES" MORE CONVENIENTLY

I have moved the "ARCHIVES" up to the top of this blog and removed the "INDEX" feature which is nearly impossible to maintain at this time. The "SEARCH BLOG" feature at the top left of the home page is much easier to activate and locate specific subjects.
(Type in a key word and click on the magnifying glass)

With the former archives listing way down at the bottom of the home page, many newcomers to this site didn't realize that there are HUNDREDS of other earlier entries on this blog, dating back to November, 2005, all available by a simple click on a given month.

THANKS FOR VISITING; I HOPE YOU RETURN OFTEN.

2008 COMPUTERS AND THE SENIOR CITIZEN

Apparently, there are numerous computer classes being held in Ewing, Hamilton and presumably Trenton and other retirement communities. My experience and my impression that few senior citizens are into computing is based on my personal experiences in dealing quite heavily in senior affairs around Mercer County. My two brothers, both of whom are over 80, want nothing to do with them, observing that they are "too complicated," they are "too busy," or they are just plain not interested in taking the time to even investigate. When personal computing really began to take hold, back in the old "MS-DOS"era and with Apple competing with IBM and "CPM" trying to keep up with "MS-DOS," computing was considered a strictly "geek" thing, left to those with scientific aptitudes; those who knew "COBAL" and other terribly technical concepts. When the computer became truly PERSONAL back in the early 80's, and Microsoft mimicked the Macintosh operating system and created WINDOWS 3.0, a new world of computing was born. Of course, the above is only a very sketchy, off the cuff mini chronology of the evolution of the personal computer. Through those years, the younger generation made haste to learn computing. I was one of the middle agers who didn't have time for that new gimmick that was supposedly going to change the world. I saw the light in 1985 when I encountered my first word processor; a huge IBM computer utilizing those large really floppy floppy disks.
Most of my contemporaries say that computing is too complicated. Especially those over 80 years of age. One site on the web states that less than 4% of the entire senior community are active in computing. Believe me: I have made it a part of my presentations to encourage them to get active. I taught beginning computer classes at the Hamilton Library a few years ago, and found the there were only a handful of seniors who wanted to learn. Most thought it was too complicated, too expensive, or an unnecessary appliance. Don't misunderstand me. There are a few seniors who are regulars on my site and who are constantly writing to tell me how they appreciate the memories I bring back to them. It is really my target audience with www.glover320.blogspot.com, but the number of visitors to this site I'm sure falls within the 4 to 5% area cited above. On the other hand, those who read my column are largely seniors and I constantly receive snail mail from them, responding to a specific column. Had those seniors been on the internet visiting my site, they would have contacted me. Here's an extract from just one website dealing with the lack of senior participation. The writer states what I have been telling my senior citizens for at least 15 years:
"Technology and the Senior Citizen"
"Most people in the 65 and younger age group deal with new technology on a daily basis - from computers at work to cell phones in the car. However, for those that did not grow up with an iPod in their back pocket, technology can be scary and intimidating. Younger generations take it for granted that they are being raised with a lot of these items. Even those in the middle-age bracket find themselves at the minimum exposed to it from their families and jobs. But for those people that no longer go to work and may have limited access outside of their homes, technology can be viewed as unncessary and frightening. What they don't realize is how much technology can make their day-to-day tasks easier and even improve their quality of life."

2008: A SPECIAL THANKS TO "LAKESIDE GIRL"

I received 2 email comments from "Lakeside Girl," one of which was an error in my current project of indexing my complete site with upwards of 2,500 posts. I erroneously indexed "Burholme," the old Allinson property at Locust Hill and linked it to the Grafton site, originally the home of Mercer County Sheriff Jacques back in the 18th century. Thanks much for pointing out the error, Lakeside Girl, and also for your input on the "Mystery Estate" on South Broad Street in Broad Street Park.

The indexing project is intimidating. As of today, I have indexed approximately 600 posts with around 1,800 to go. It is a time consuming endeavor, but will be well worth the labor as this site continues to grow.

Also: Many of the comments come through without the sender's email. I have no problem if a visitor wishes to remain anonymous. However, I suspect that the somewhat confusing book form causes those who send comments to omit their email addresses. I would have rather contacted "Lakeside Girl" via return email to thank her if I had her address.
If you do not wish to be anonymous, you can type your email address in with your comment.

CHECK OUT THE SUBJECT INDEX; A WORK IN PROGRESS

One lady wrote to me and said she spent the better part of a night surfing through this website, interested in many of the posts. Another gentleman wrote saying he had been reading magazines during his lunch breaks, but with his discovery of this website, he takes his office break with a cup of coffee and spends his break time surfing the many entries.

As the site approaches 2,500 posts, I have decided to go back to square one and index each entry. As you might imagine, editing each and every post and adding it into the appropriate index is extremely time consuming. I ask your indulgence for the few mis-spelled words. I touch type, and in order to expedite the index editing, you may find an error in spelling or other errors. They will be corrected eventually.

The index can be found on the right side of this page, under the "Archives" listing. Clicking on a subject in the indexing table will bring up all the references on the site to the given subject. When it is completed, it will be a real time saver for those who are looking for a specific subject, as opposed to those who just like a leisurely casual read of the various posts.

Redundant:: To repeat endlessly. (My definition)

Just a reminder to newcomers to this site. There are well over a thousand posts and it can be overwhelming. That's where the "Search Blog" feature comes in. Look up to the left of the home page and you will see a white rectangular space next to which is "Search Blog." Enter your search subject and if there are any posts, the screen will change and all subjects searched for will be sorted. Example: Key in SOUTH TRENTON and any posts which apply to that area will appear.
Key in DEUTZVILLE and all Deutzville related subjects will appear.

YOU WILL NOTE THAT THE GUEST BOOK COMMENTS WHICH VIEWERS HAVE
SENT REGARDING SPECIFIC POSTS IS ALSO A PART OF THE SEARCH PROCESS. THESE MESSAGES WERE INCLUDED AT THE REQUEST OF MANY VISITORS TO THIS SITE.
SHOULD THE MESSAGES BE OF NO INTEREST, JUST PAGE DOWN UNTIL YOU REACH THE END OF THE MESSAGE SEGMENT, AND NORMAL VIEWING WILL CONTINUE.

HAPPY SURFIN' !

GRAPHICS TOO SMALL? CHANGE TO 800 X 600. HERE'S HOW

ARE YOUR EYES HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE SIZE
OF THE POSTS ON MY SITE(s)? CHANGE THE SCREEN RESOLUTION!

HERE'S THE VERY SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT:

GO TO "START," SLIDE OVER TO THE "CONTROL PANEL,"
AND CLICK, THEN CLICK ON "DISPLAY, " THEN CHOOSE "SETTINGS,"

YOU ARE ROBABLY SET AT 1024 X 768. CHANGE THAT BY SLIDING THE MARKER TO THE LEFT TO 800 X 600.

CLICK "APPLY." YOUR SCREEN WILL MOMENTARILY
GO BLACK AND IMMEDIATELY COME BACK WITH THE NEW AND
LARGER CHARACTERS. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE NEW SETTING,
JUST REVERSE THE PROCESS AND SLIDE BACK TO 1024 X 768.

DON'T BE INTIMIDATED BY THIS ADJUSTMENT. IT IS EASILY REVERSIBLE
BY SIMPLY REPEATING THE ABOVE PROCESS AND SLIDING BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL SETTINGS.

2008: ANOTHER TOM GLOVER WEBSITE

I HAVE JUST STARTED ANOTHER WEBSITE DEDICATED TO BOTH BROADCAST AND AMATEUR RADIO. AS WA2RVU, AN AMATEUR RADIO LICENSE HOLDER SINCE THE EARLY 1970'S I HAVE MET MANY WONDERFMPUL "HAMS" WHO HAVE MADE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON ME. MY INTEREST IN BROADCAST RADIO GOES BACK TO MY VERY EARLIEST CHILDHOOD. NOW IN MY MID 70'S MY GROWING COLLECTION OF OLD RADIO PROGRAMS ON MP3 LET ME ONCE AGAIN HEAR THE MUSIC OF GLENN MILLER, THE EXCITEMENT OF "THE SHADOW" AND "HOP HARRIGAN," AND THE WIT OF JEAN SHEPHERD, MY VERY FAVORITE SATIRIST.
CHECK OUT:
TOM GLOVER'S GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO
http://www.gloveradio.blogspot.com/

THANKS TO EUGENE BERGMANN FOR VISITING MY NEW WEBSITE, BUT MORE THANKS FOR CORRECTING MY MIS-SPELLING OF JEAN SHEPHERD. (I SPELLED HIS LAST NAME "SHEPARD.") THANKS FOR CORRECTING ME, EUGENE AND THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO WRITE.

MR. EUGENE BERGMANN WROTE:

Good to see that you will be commenting on broadcast radio and ham radio, especially on Jean Shepherd (note spelling). My book about his work, EXCELSIOR, YOU FATHEAD! THE ART AND ENIGMA OF JEAN SHEPHERD was published 3/2005.
Excelsior!

2008: THE GRAPHIC PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED

A FEW DAYS AGO I POSTED A NOTICE THAT THE FOLKS AT BLOGGER.COM WERE WORKING ON THE PROBLEM OF VIEWING THE GRAPHICS. YOU PROBABLY HAD A PROBLEM ACCESSING MY PHOTOS AND ARTICLES UNLESS YOU HAD A VIABLE GRAPHIC SOFTWARE PACKAGE. I HAVE PHOTOSHOP AND WHEN I DOUBLE CLICKED ON MY IMAGES, THEY WERE PRESENTED ONSCREEN VIA PHOTOSHOP. NOW WE ARE BACK TO NORMAL. IT WILL NO LONGER BE NECESSARY TO GO THROUGH THE HOOPS TO VIEW MY GRAPHICS. THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE, AND THANKS TO BLOGGER.COM FOR THE QUICK REMEDY.
