1912: BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - HAMILTON AND CHESTNUT AVENUES

Like those pristine Maxwell House photos from the Duke University Library, I am posting this incredibly beautiful photo of Bethany Presbyterian church. Mr. John Hansbury told me of this site. It was downloaded from "FLICKR" where "rich701" has posted a gallery of Trenton and other area photos from A.L. Opdyke, and early 20th century photographer. I am requesting formal permission to post these on this website, and assuming that permission must come from the Hopewell Valley Historical Society whose collection is housed in the Mercer County Library's Hopewell branch. I would assume that these are public domain, but would never want to be in violation of copyright laws. Accordingly, I advise anyone who has the rights to these photos contact me and I will delete them if they are not available to the public. In the meantime, many thanks to Mr. John Hansbury for the heads up on this beautiful gallery of local photos.

1886: GENESIS OF CHAMBERSBURG'S BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

I have combined these two graphics from the "BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH" folder. At first I was confused as far as the vantage point. The square tower is no more, and the view is believed to be at Chestnut and Hamilton with the main entrance apparently being on Chestnut. Perhaps a more knowledgeable local Burg area visitor can confirm. The Centennial School was located on Whittaker Avenue.

HI TOM....I BELIEVE CENTENNIAL SCHOOL WAS LOCATED WHERE ROMAN HALL RESTAURANT AND PARKING LOT IS NOW LOCATED. I MAY BE WRONG BUT MY MEMORY IS STARTING TO FADE. BEST REGARDS.

1938: TRENTON'S BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Here's a photo of the beautiful interior of Bethany Presbyterian Church on Hamilton and Chestnut Avenues in Trenton as it appeared 72 years ago.

1904: ATTENDANCE AT BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

In today's press, we often read of the drop off in church attendance in most branches of America's mainstream churches. As you can see by this article, the problem has been with us for many years...in this case, 1904.

1934: "DO A GOOD DAILY"

THIS IS TROOP 2 HEADQUARTERED AT BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ON HAMILTON AVENUE. THE DEPRESSION RESULTED IN HARD TIMES FOR COUNTLESS CITIZENS AND THE BOYS SCOUTS WERE THERE TO OFFER THEIR ASSISTANCE.

1888: BETHANY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH DEDICATED

1900: Bethany Presbyterian Church

One of the more familiar landmarks along Hamilton Avenue for well over 100 years, this venerable old church still serves the community with pride. Looking at the over 100 year old engraving of the facility, one comes to the conclusion that little has changed in the overall appearance of the building.
