1919: COMMUNIST PLAN TO TAKE OVER AMERICA - SCARY!

The "Reds," also known as Communists, were beginning to take hold in the years following World War I as far leftist Socialists and Communists demanded changes in the American way of life. Their remedy for "change" is list in the 6 phases of the plan to overthrow the American republic. This article is from the November 11, 1919 Trenton Times.

1969: BILL TIGHUE VS. CLIFF SNEDEKER

Politics will always be identified by party number one attacking party number two on a stance with which each holds firm beliefs. As that old saying goes, "that's what makes politics." I am currently going through my "POLITICS" files and find that the folder is growing even as I search for more on the subject. I was out of the Trenton-Hamilton-Mercer area during the 1960's, 70's and 80's as I was involved in my daily commute to New Brunswick where Lynch and company were battling against their political opposites. This article is particularly apropos as it relates to a subject that is in today's headlines with Frontier Airlines making local news as well as the folks in Ewing and Mercer County working to improve Mercer Airport.

1938: POLITICS IN HAMILTON TOWNSHIP

"The more things change, the more they stay the same" is a time honored saying that has been around for years. It supposedly comes from a French intellectual from the very distant past, and the veracity of the saying has endured over many centuries. However, as can be seen in the article above, it certainly does apply to American politics, local and national. The above article details the outcome of the November, 1938 election wherein the Republican party regained the reins of local government in Hamilton Township. I have highlighted the paragraph where "housecleaning" will be the order of the day. As a non-political observation, house cleaning still exists today. My problem with that concept is that qualified and competent people should not be considered fodder for political "house cleaning."

1981: RAFFERTY FOR GOVERNOR?

Were it not for this man, there would be no
"TOM GLOVER'S HAMILTON LIBRARY SCRAPBOOK."
Indeed, there would be no Hamilton Township Public Library Local History Collection. Back in the early 1990's, Jack Rafferty, Jack Lacy, Mo Rossi, and Joe Belina agreed with me that Hamilton Township was not capitalizing on its magnificent historical heritage. It was my aim to change that unfortunate reality. Jack Rafferty, unlike many local politicians in high places, had an intense interest in our local history.

1968: CAN YOU IDENTIFY ANY WITHOUT PEEKING?

I did fairly well on this picto-quiz on those people I knew personally. However, there were a number of personalities I didn't recognize. In 1986 I was commuting out of town daily and there were a number of persons whom I never met. Old time Hamiltonians will have fun checking out the "now and then" photos.

1944: WALT BRONEK JR: THIS ONE'S FOR YOU

Hamilton's Walt Bronek's Dad is shown in the photo above, as is an old friend from my Kuser Family years, Bill Howe, brother of Edna Howe Kuser of Kuser Farm. Look for more WWII photos of the many heroes from "The Greatest Generation" who made the pages of newspapers from the past.

1925: THREE HAMILTON COMMITTEEMEN FACE GRAND JURY

Wow! What fascinating, interesting, and heretofore unknown snips of history I find as I page through the millions of pages in my newspaper collection! Who would have thought that 3 Hamilton Committeemen would be charged with neglecting a site in Broad Street Park where there was apparently a dumping area. Read on.

1925:HAMILTON TOWNSHIP: "THE BLACK SPOT OF MERCER COUNTY?"

From the "CRIME-MORALS-SOCIAL VALUES" folder in the Hamilton Library digital folder comes this intriguing tale of Prosecutor vs. Committeeman replete with houses of disrepute, illegal beer, stills, gambling, and all the makings of a local scandal. Politics: Don't 'ya love it?

1931: LOCAL COMMUNISTS CELEBRATE MAY DAY

May Day is a big day in Soviet Russia and other Communistic countries. Here in America, there is, and has been, a number of citizens who lean beyond Socialism and give a sympathetic eye to the Communist form of government. Locally, Communist demonstrations were commonplace in the 1920's and early 30's.

1981: REPUBLICANS SWEEP HAMILTON, LOSE COUNTY

This graphic details the Republican victory in Hamilton Township back in 1981. The following Graphic details the Democratic victory in Mercer County. Ahh....Politics! Note the byline showing Wayne Davis as the writer of the above article. Wayne is a dear friend of many years who is responsible for whatever success I have had as a freelance writer. It was he who recruited me one morning back in the early 1980's during an amateur radio conversation on the late, lamented "commuter net."

1981: DEMOCRATS SWEEP MERCER BUT NOT HAMILTON

Here are a number of photos from prominent Mercer citizens from 27 years ago. Check out the very young looking Doug Palmer with his Clark Gable mustache. And there's the very popular Frannie McManimon, a pillar of strength in the local Democratice party. And check out that very young guy in the top row we used to call "Joe-bo;" Mercer's Joe Bochini!

1979: Republican Campaign

Here's a photo of Bill Mathesius before he became a no nonsense judge in Mercer County. Conservative judges don't fare too well in ultra liberal New Jersey. Just one or two errant statements and it's strike 3. Some of us miss you, Bill.

1979: GIL LUGOSSY FOR SHERIFF!

He was, and is, one of the best. Not just because he is a fellow Hamilton "Hornet" from HHS '54, but because he has countless friends and colleagues who respect his selfless community service over the years. It is my privilege to be one of those countless "friends."

1979: The Democratic Campaign

Franny McManimon: He was loved by all....Democrat or Republican. Here's an interesting view of the 1980 Democratic campaign.

1979: Peter Inverso, the consummate gentleman

*THE LAST LINE OF THE ABOVE GRAPHIC (COLUMN 3)
IS MISSING. THERE WAS A HOLE IN THAT PORTION OF THE PAGE.

Here's a mini biography of Pete Inverso, the very popular former Senator, bank executive, and prominent local citizen.

1979: Republicans Organize for the 1980 Campaign Season

Look at all those young men; all movers and shakers in the Republican Party of thirty years ago. As that old song went, "Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end..."

1988: BETTY HOLLAND FOR CONGRESS

Her husband Art was one of the best mayors of Trenton. He was an "old school" type of administrator and governed during a time when Trenton was a proud and vital downtown, with stores and theaters packed to capacity. The graphic above is from Betty Holland's campaign. I have no doubt that she would have been a great office holder.

There are a number of familiar names in the lengthy list above, including a young Richard Hughes.

1973: "FRANNIE" MCMANIMON

From the "Notable Persons" folder in the Hamilton Library's Local History Collection comes this little press article on one of Hamilton's favorite local personalities. Frannie was known and loved by all, Republican or Democrat. Indeed the McManimon family has left an indelible imprint on the local scene.
