1946: TRENTON TENNIS GREAT EDDIE MOYLAN

Originally posted on Tuesday, December 09, 2008

Here's an interesting mini biography of Eddie and alumnus from Trenton Catholic High School which had an incredible history of turning out sports champions in every sport. I recently heard from a nephew of Eddie, and I hope he returns to this site for future posts relating to his uncle. Eddie probably won't remember "Tommy" Glover and Don Slabicki, who were members of the Kuser Farm Tennis Club back in the late 40's and the 50's. Eddie was "Mr. Nice Guy;" a gentleman through and through.

HI TOM.... I REMEMBER EDDIE WELL AND ALSO HIS BROTHER PAT. EDDIE WAS GREAT AT TENNIS AND I RECALL COMPETING WITH PAT AT BASEBALL. I ALWAYS WAS INTERESTED IN TENNIS BUT COULD NEVER AFFORD A RAQCKET DURING THOSE DAYS. PAUL NAPOLITANO FROM CHAMBERSBURG WAS ALSO ONE OF THE BETTER PLAYERS THAT MADE GOOD USE OF THE COURTS AT COLUMBUS PARK IN THE 1940S. BEST REGARDS.

Hi Tom: Paul Napolitano also played tennis at Cadwalader Park Courts off Parkside Avenue. The clay courts were rolled and lined and enjoyed by many of us, including Ed Torres, Russ Backus, Dave Hewitt and Albert Stark. We spent many summer evenings playing in the league. It was great fun

2010: TRENTON CATHOLIC'S DYNAMITE BACKFIELD

Among the many names associated with local sports, one name repeatedly come to the fore and that is one of the Warwick family. Here's a 1937 clip from Trenton Catholic Boys' High School showing the boys charging at the camera man. They must have looked very intimidating to the opposition.

1940: TRENTON HIGH VS TRENTON CATHOLIC

Unlike my years at Hamilton High, Trenton Catholic was seldom considered the "underdog" in basketball. That venerable but unfortunately no longer with us boys' high school had a stellar reputation in nearly every sport. The above graphic has been re-assembled in order to replace the original Times column with was 12 column inches in length.

1945: TRENTON CATHOLIC'S DAN CHASE REMEMBERS

Many thanks to Dan Chase for visiting my website and leaving the interesting guest book entry which is inset above. Dan is a contemporary of my brother Bud who was in Hamilton High's class of '45. I don't recall the canal before it was filled in by the freeway, Dan, but my brothers do. Your guest book entry is very interesting. Thanks for visiting. I hope you return often.

1944: Trenton Catholic Boys' High School Crucifix

The Senior boys from room 8 at Trenton Catholic were responsible for the acquisition of this crucifix in honor of the Trenton Catholic alumni who were serving in the armed forces during WWII.

I posted the above graphic a few weeks ago. It turns out that I made an error in the description above when I referred to the "lower grades" at Trenton Catholic as being responsible for the acquisition of the Crucifix. I have deleted the erroneous entry and am re-posting it here with the correct information.

Thanks to Mr. Ed Margerum, TCHS '55 for calling my attention to my error. THANKS, ED!

Hi Tom:

I don't think that it's correct to say that the "lower grades" were responsible. The newspaper text says "seniors 4-8". "4" designates that they are seniors. "8" was their homeroom.

2009: TRENTON CATHOLIC BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL WEBSITE

How great is this? Mr. James Maloney added a comment to my recent post announcing an up-coming reunion for the Cathedral-Trenton Catholic classes of 1959. I visited the site and it is INCREDIBLE! All you "Golden Wave" guys, including those that beat the bejabbers out of our HHS basketball teams over the years will really love it. I am adding the link to my website.

AND: I must admit that I am confused as to Mr. James Maloney. I have a very dear friend who, along with his wife Helen, were fellow communicants at St. Anthony's in Trenton. Indeed, Jim and Bill Maloney spent many happy summer weekends with my son and me down at the St.Alphonso Retreat House in West Long Branch. However, when I saw the comment signed "James" Maloney, I assumed it to be another Maloney, and felt that I must maintain proper literary etiquette and refrain from calling him ":Jim," which of course is the name I call my dear friends Helen and Jim Maloney. Confused? Me too.

1944: TRENTON CATHOLIC FRESHMEN PRODUCTION

"Life Begins at 16;" indeed it does! At 16, I had 3...count 'em, 3 (or was it 4?) female classmates with whom I was carrying a romantic torch. As one who received my complete education in a co-ed environment, it is difficult to imagine what it would have been like in grammar and high school without all those lovely female crushes I embraced during my 12 years of schooling. Apparently you guys from Trenton Catholic did all right, but it must have been a challenge to have your best girl friend across town at Cathedral and only see her on weekends.

1939: TRENTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL PTA PROGRAM

This is a very obscure piece of local history. In my many years of collecting, I had never found any references to the PTA at Trenton Catholic.

1945: NEW VICE PRINCIPAL FOR TRENTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

I receive numerous emails requesting more info on "the Golden Wave," AKA as Trenton Catholic High School. Henceforth, I will concentrate on future posts and see that I get them scanned and published.

1940: Trenton Catholic High School Honors

Once again, familiar names pop up from out of the past. On a personal note, I see two of the Deitrich boys, Bob and Fran, Jimmie O'Rourke, and Bob Rupprecht. Other visitors will also probably see acquaintances.

DOES ANY VISITOR HAVE PHOTOS FOR JOE?

I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING EMAIL FROM MR. JOE ZUBA LOOKING FOR PHOTOS AND OR ARTICLES ON THE 1950 AND 60'S TRENTON CATHOLIC BASKETBALL TEAM. UNFORTUNATELY, MY COLLECTION NEVER CONCENTRATED ON THE ERA. I WILL CHECK MY HAMILTON HIGH YEARBOOKS TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY TRENTON CATHOLIC-HAMILTON BASKETBALL PHOTOS. IN THE MEANTIME, IF ANY VISITOR HAS ANYTHING, PLEASE EMAIL ME AND I WILL SEE THAT JOE GETS THEM.

JOE ZUBA WROTE:

Tom,

I wrote to you about a year ago, have you had luck in finding sports news on the 1950 and early 1960 Trenton Catholic Basketball Teams possibly with some photos. I enjoy reading the news articles on your site and check back everyday for new ones. Keep up the great work.

1940: TRENTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTATION

SORRY ABOUT THEPOOR QUALITY OF THE ABOVE PHOTO. THE ORIGINAL PRESENTED A REAL CHALLENGE TO MY EFFORTS TO ENHANCE IT.

THEY WERE THESPIANS WHO WERE PART OF THE 1940 TCHS PRODUCTION OF "MAN IN THE SHADOW." I WONDER IF THE JOE MALONEY IN THE PHOTO ABOVE IS RELATED TO MY ST. ANTHONY/ST. ALPHONSO RETREAT FRIENDS,
JIM AND BILL MALONEY.

1944: TRENTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL VETERAN

ONE OF THE BIG MISTAKES MANY MUNICIPALITIES MADE AFTER WORLD WAR II WAS TO REMOVE AND DESTROY THOSE BIG BOARDS IN MANY COMMUNITIES AND IN FRONT OF MANY CHURCHES WHICH LISTED THE VETERANS WHO SERVED IN WORLD WAR II. THEY SHOULD BE REPOSING IN OUR PARKS. I INTEND TO SAVE EACH AND EVERY LISTING OF THIS TYPE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS WHO ARE TRYING TO FIND INFO ON THOSE BRAVE VETERANS.
