FROM THE "NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOP,MENT" FOLDER

It would be far too time consuming to dedicate a single post to a single article. Instead, here is a collection of articles and ads that are a part of the Hamilton Township Public Library Local History Collection.

1909-1911: EVOLUTION OF NEIGHBORHOODS IN THE "LALOR TRACT"

These two graphics show the evolution of the area along Lalor Street that includes Remson, Home, Virginia, and other familiar South Trenton neighborhoods whose real estate planning was laid out in the year1909.

1911: GEORGE HAMMEL'S "NEWHURST"

With what must have been an attempt at humor, Mr. George Q. Hammell laid out a parcel of land adjoining Hamilton's "Oldenhurst" area and called it "Newhurst." Today is the area I believe to be Partridge, Ellwood, Edmund between South Olden and Newkirk Avenues. I am not too confident of these boundaries, as I have yet to discover the boundaries of Newhurst, Oldenhurst, and Colonial Park.

1938 (Ca. 1938) Sportsmen from the Italian American Sportsmens' Club

So many familiar names! Carlo, there's a Benedetti in there, there's Salamandra, Rossi, Funari, Mancuso.....many others. Before the place changed to the Villa Ristorante, the caretakers of the old Italian American Sportsmen Club let me metal detect on the property. I discovered that skeet shooting was a very important part of the recreation on the open field. There were 12 gauge shell casings all over the place on the field a bit beyond Kuser Road.

1903: LIBERTY, LALOR, STANTON AND ADELINE STREETS

From the "NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT" folder, this very interesting article on the genesis of the breaking up of the Brearly real estate holdings in South Trenton. I am building a very interesting collection of Land Associations and other real estate ventures which were instrumental in the expansion of the suburbs. Stay tuned.

1887: TRENTON'S GARFIELD, CLEVELAND, SO. LOGAN AVENUE DEVELOPMENT

Right now I am going through my "NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT" folder; scanning,
cutting, copying, pasting, and tweaking images so you can see how the city of Trenton expanded into what were then the suburbs. Time has taken its toll on many of these neighborhoods. Most of the families of the original folks who availed themselves of the bargain lots as offered in the above 1887 ad subsequently moved out of the area to newer suburban developments. Time marches on.
