2013: ELEANOR GOLDY GUEAR HISTORY OF MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH

If there was one other place I would love to live beside my Kuser School neighborhood, it would be in that incredibly beautiful area of Hamilton Township known as Yardville Heights. Of course, the "Heights" appendage is due to the fact that the little neighborhood that is more like a village, is located on a prominent hill along the Crosswicks Creek. Eleanor Guear's history of the Memorial Baptist Church is an integral part of the history of Hamilton Township. Speaking of Yardville Heights history, my good friend Don Whiteley's family are pioneer residents of this incredibly beautiful and attractive neighborhood. Don has two very interesting websites dedicated to Yardville Heights. Check them out at  http://www.donremembers.blogspot.com and www.donwhiteley.com.

1913: YARDVILLE & YARDVILLE HEIGHTS COMMUNITY NEWS

Even as I describe Groveville as a "Mayberry RFD" venue, so too can yesterday's Yardville and Yardville Heights qualify for that bucolic small town feel. In those long ago years, everyone seemed to know everyone else, and it would be a good bet that neighbors watched out for neighbors. Note the old family surnames in the article above. I added the photo of the old school on Route 156 to add a bit of historical reality to the article. The newspapers of the day would not be able to reproduce such a pristine photo.

Tom - Once again you have filled in a bit of family history! The birthday party mentioned in this article for George Goldy, my father, was his 12th birthday. Thanks! Lakeside Girl

Lakeside girl - I didn't realize George was your father! (or I had forgotten!) George was my first source of information when I started researching local history! I am forever indebted to him for that! The information he gave me was so fascinating and he even went to the trouble of photocopying some articles and hand drawing a map of Lakeside Blvd!! Hope all is well in the family!

1914: THE LAKESIDE PARK LAND COMPANY

Take a 96 year old newspaper page that's foxed a deep tan with age, place it in the scanner, set the scanner for 300 dots per inch, activate the "De-screen" feature to eliminate "moire," enhance the graphic with a colorful title and border, and we have an attractive, historically valuable addition to the Hamilton Local History digital database! Such was the process I used on this delightfully historic real estate ad offering lots for sale by Charles G. Teunon at Hamilton's legendary Lakeside Park. It is a little more time consuming to dress up these historic ads, but after all, this ad has been couched within the darkening pages of the "Daily State Gazette" for 96 years!

1944: YARDVILLE HEIGHTS KNOTT BROTHERS

Herewith two more members of "The Greatest Generation" who met during WWII and added a bit of joy the their war-torn world. The Knott brothers were residents of Yardville Heights. Unfortunately, the photos have exposure problems. However, I did manage to balance the exposure and gamma levels. Thank you Holly Knott for helping me to recognize all out veterans from WWII. Should this blog survive the years, our great, great grandchildren will be very interested in this touch of history. In order to render the Trenton Times article in the center of the graphic readable, I have reproduced it in its original size.

1926: FIELD DAY AT YARDVILLE HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY

From the "YARDVILLE-YARDVILLE HEIGHTS" folder in the Hamilton Library Local History Collection, this enhanced digital graphic. Yardville Heights Elementary School is an architecturally one of the most beautiful schools in Hamilton. The graphic tells of Field Day exercises held by students at the school.

2009: HAVE YOU VISITED DON WHITELEY'S YARDVILLE HEIGHTS BLOG?

It is nice to know that there are a FEW other senior citizens extant who have taken the time to learn basic computer operation. One such is Don Whiteley, who has two web sites that are really wonderful. Don is an excellent story teller, and his experiences in growing up in the Yardville Heights area will be of interest to many. You can access Don's two websites by clicking on the appropriate link under my "Don't Miss These Interesting Links."

1905: WOLF'S MILLS, YARDVILLE

Finding information on the Gropp's Lake area and the various mills that were located there has proved to be as elusive as finding definitive information on Hamilton's Camp Olden. I have found references to Lowrie's Mill which was on the south side of the lake (toward Bordentown), and also Kirby's Mill. Early century references to Gropp's Lake included the name Hutchinson Pond. However, I am puzzled as to the "Wolf's Mills" and will continue the search

1988: YARDVILLE HEIGHTS SCHOOL OLDIES DANCE

They are there to help in every school in every town in the U.S.A.. In this graphic, the Yardville Heights Grammar School PTA is planning Oldies dance at the Nottingham Ballroom. One wonders what "oldies" were being danced to.

Yardville's Lakeview Hotel - Date Unknown

This is one of the more rare historical items in my Hamilton Township collection. Prior to acquiring it back in the 1970's, I had no idea there was a Lakeview Hotel in Lakeside Park. It was located on the site of Dick Peterson's Service Station on South Broad and Lakeside Boulevard. I would guess that the above extract was circa 1914.

1930'S YARDVILLE HEIGHTS COMMUNITY NEWS

UNFORTUNATELY, THESE CLIPPINGS ARE UNDATED. IT IS A PRETTY SURE GUESS THAT THEY ARE FROM THE EARLY 1930'S, I SUSPECT 1930 OR 1934.

LAKESIDE PARK AND YARDVILLE HEIGHTS SOCIAL NOTES ALWAYS PROVIDE AN INTERESTING READ. HAMILTON SQUARE, YARDVILLE, YARDVILLE HEIGHTS, GROVEVILLE, BROAD STREET PARK, BROMLEY, AND DEUTZVILLE WERE RELEGATED TO THE "SUBURBS" PAGE IN MANY EDITIONS OF THE NEWSPAPERS OF THE PAST. ONCE AGAIN, OLD FAMILY NAMES MAKE THEIR APPEARANCE VERY FREQUENTLY. IN THESE POSTS, THE "OLD NATIVE" NAMES OF MIDDLETON, IRONS, AND TOTTEN ARE LISTED.
