1936: Father Coughlin, Renegade Catholic Priest
Not many folks know the story of Father Coughlin. He was a thorn in the side of the Franklin Roosevelt administration back in the 1930's. From his Michigan church he broadcast a weekly program which was vehemently against President Roosevelt's "New Deal," and most of the administrations conduct of foreign affairs. He was ultimately silenced by the church heirarchy.

1915; St. Michael's Orphanage, Hopewell
Unfortunately, offset reproduction in the early part of the 20th century was not too advanced. I have succeeded in enhancing this graphic. The original was quite washed out. However, it does give an idea of the size of the edifice as it looked in its heyday.

1869: IRONIC! St. Mary's Cathedral

"....if not destroyed by fire..."
This article was written with the intention of observing the fact that many churches are built with construction features which will render them good for hundreds of years. How ironic that the beautiful original St. Mary's was burned by that animal back in the 1950's. Does anyone doubt that there is ever-present evil in this world we live in?

1913:Holy Name Society Convocation

A number of years ago, I served 4 or 5 terms as President of the St. Anthony Holy Name Society. As many of my St. Anthony colleagues will attest, we felt fortunate if we had 10 members in attendance. Had the zeal expressed by those thousands of church members continued through the years, I would guess that there would be much less violence and societal mayhem as we find in today's society. I would assume that this lack of participation is not unique to the Roman Catholic faith. I would assume the same apathy is apparent in other religious persuasions.
