1916:GERSHOM MOTT - MOTT SCHOOL

This facility is still alive and well down on Centre Street in Trenton. It is a South Trenton institution and the place of learning for many old time Trenton residents. My friend, the late Lelan "Lee" Buker gave me a copy of a multi page reunion news letter from Mott alumni.

I went to Mott for K through 6.
I did not recogize any of the teachers names except Mary Korn. I had her for 4th grade in 1951.
She was a teacher that did not tolerate silliness, but nice withal. Incidently there is an MSNBC contributor, David Korn, who looks very much as Miss Korn did. Each time I see him I think of her.
Mott School has moved to Stokley Ave. just around the corner from where we once lived in a row house on Third St. Lots of my early memories attach to the Centre Street building.

1916 MOTT SCHOOL MINI HISTORY

The Mott School was the successor to one of Nottingham Township's first school houses in South Trenton. When Hamilton Township was formed in 1842, that section of what was then Nottingham Township wa annexed to the city of Trenton. The above story by young Mott student Jeanette Willey tells is a mini history of that great old school which still stands today on Trenton's Centre Street.

1937: FRANKLIN, ROEBLING, MCCLELLAN, MOTT, AND MOSES SCHOOL

Here is another post from the Trenton Evening Times' 1937 series of articles on the schools in the city of Trenton. I have consolidated two of them into one graphic; more to come.

1916: MOTT SCHOOL, CENTRE STREET TRENTON

This photo and article from 1916 gives a nice view of Trenton's Mott School. The historic edifice has been the school of many notable Trentonians over the years, and continues today to educate South Trenton students. My friend, the late Leon "Lee" Buker gave me a photo copy of an 8-1/2 x 14 twelve page pamphlet entitled, "MOTT SCHOOL MEMORIES' which is filled with brief memories of many of the alumni who attended the school from its earliest years up to 1983 when the pamphlet was published. Unfortunately the interesting document does not lend itself to re-producing as a web graphic. I am working on bringing extracts of some of those memories, and will publish them in future blog posts. The building to the right in the photo is of the Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church which was also a South Trenton landmark.

1937: TRENTON'S MOTT SCHOOL

This new Epson tabloid scanner Library Director George Conwell procured for the Local History Collection is incredible. Consider the fact that the graphic above is an offset photo. The "
de-screening" feature of the scanner, along with the ability to adjust the exposure of the photo has resulted in the graphic above which is not too far from the original Kodak photo.
