1945 HOMEDELL SCHOOL CLASS PICTURE

These are classmates of mine who joined me at Kuser Annex as Hamilton High School freshmen back in 1947-1948. Students from Homedell, Greenwood and Rowan-Willey all transferred to Kuser Annex. We are celebrating our 60th year (belatedly) on March 31 with a luncheon at the Mercer County Boat House.

1923: PRINCIPAL THIRZA STERLING MCGALLIARD

Ms. McGalliard was another Principal from "the old school" who insisted on self control, discipline, and good manners. I originally assumed that like Emily Reynolds, and Leona Kistardt both of whom had schools named for them. that Thirza Sterling McGalliard was also named for her as a prominent Hamilton school employee. However, once again, I was in error. I am informed that the school was named for William McGalliard whose farm was part of the property on which the school is located. Thanks for the correction, "Peggy." who wrote:

Tom, I thought McGalliard Elementary was formally called William J. McGalliard or a name similar to that, not Thirza McGalliard Elementary. Am I wrong?

1938: Homedell School Safety Patrol

1935: HOMEDELL RECEPTION GRADE MINIATURE FLORIST PROJECT

I try to make the graphics on this blog as close to the originals as I can. However, as seen in the photo above, the photograph had an exposure problem resulting in a poor combination of grays and blacks. The photo is too dark and even with my state of the art photo imaging software, there is no way to bring about a gray-black balance. Hamilton Township public schools never referred to the first year of grammar school as "Kindergarten;" we all entered "Reception" grade.

1922: HOMEDELL SCHOOL'S THIRZA MCGALLIARD

This lady was another educator who, like Emily Reynolds, was a Prussian-type disciplinarian. She was always fair to her students, but woe unto those who would go against the rules of the school. The above letter is very interesting, as Ms. McGalliard offers suggestions on the timing of school exams.

HAMILTON'S HOMEDELL NEIGHBORHOOD

There are numerous files on Homedell in the Hamilton Library Local Collection files. This is one of them:
The area known as Homedell is located in the general area of Liberty, Redfern, and East Franklin streets. The land in that area was once a part of huge land holdings of the Hutchinson family. Symmes B. Hutchinson was a prominent resident of Hamilton Township. (Hutchinson Street at the foot of Cedar Lane Hill is named for the family)
