1893: DEDICATING TRENTON'S BATTLE MONUMENT

This full page DAILY TRUE AMERICAN graphic is a challenge to one's ocular abilities, but my 81 year old eyes are able to discern the text albeit marginal. The city of Trenton has so much to offer to the public with its countless points of interest from Riverview Cemetery on the west, Battle Monument on the north, St. Michael's P.E. church, the historic Mill Hill area and center city with its numerous historic venues. The above graphic is page 1 of 4. I will eventually get to the other 3 pages as time allows.

1941: NORTH BROAD AT "FIVE POINTS;" BATTLE MONUMENT AREA

What a gorgeous photo! To the far left is "Levin's" Department Store. Many North Trenton residents will find this to be a very familiar photo. The are has been completely transformed over the years, and this picture is familiar only to those of us who remember the Trenton that was.

1893: DEDICATION OF TRENTON'S BATTLE MONUMENT

 

The above graphics have been extracted and enhanced using the available engravings and information from the 1893 October "MONUMENT EDITION" in the Trenton "DAILY TRUE AMERICAN" newspaper. I have added the color and other outside graphics. The week following Christmas will be Trenton's annual celebration of "PATRIOT'S WEEK."

1938: MANGOLD PHARMACY - PRINCETON AND PENNINGTON AVENUE

The battle monument area of Trenton has seen dramatic changes over these many years. Above is a photo of one of the more vintage commercial establishments that was once located on the corner of Princeton and Pennington Avenues. The Mangold name is familar in the history of Kuser Mansion. A Mr. Mangold was the first caretaker in the early part of the 20th century. There is a possibility that there is a relationship with the pharmaceutical Mangold.

Tom....We had a Mr. Mangold as a neighbor on Bert Ave, in Villa Park in the early 30s. I don't recall what his profession was but he had a screened in tennis court on the lot next door to him. It was strange to see a home with a tennis court on a residential street but then again that area contained many prominent people at that time, including the Police Chief and Wm. Dearden, the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Many teachers also lived in that neighborhood and people who were with St. Francis Hospital. It was a sad time whwn we had to move due to the depression. 1893: TRENTON'S BATTLE MONUMENT

This engraving was sent to me a week or so ago by Alan Wildblood. I had completely forgotten that I had enhanced it and thought that I had posted it. It took an email from Alan, asking about the engraving to remind me that I had just experienced another senior moments.

1923: Valentine's Blacksmith Shop

Long before the Battle Monument was erected and dedicated in 1893, the land on which it was built was occupied by Valentine's Blacksmith Shop. Photos of this type spur the imagination. I can vaguely visualize what the are known as "five points" looked like back in the 18th and 19th century.

1891: Description of the proposed Trenton Battle Monument

Here's an historic graphic which was published before the completion of the famed Trenton Battle Monument. Note that the statue of George Washington is different from the statue that was finally decided upon.
