1969: HAMILTON HIGH'S JIM COURSEN RETIRES

Back in the 1960's and early 1970's, "Charles Van" created quite a community controversy as he wrote a number of very controversial and critical columns relating to the inefficiencies of the Hamilton Township school system. A number of letters to the editor suggested that "Charles Van" was a pen name, and the actual author should identify himself. As my research continues, I may find more information on the writer. In the meantime, he wrote this article on the retirement of Jim Coursen; "Jim Crow" as we called him back during my Hamilton High School years.

Hi Tommy
Jim Coursen.I visited his office many times receiving"HOURS",mostly, for being late. One time however for going to tune town which was off limits at lunchtime. "big Jim was waiting for me at the side door that I was trying to sneak back in. That cost me 5 hours more;but Jim Coursen was a strict but very fair man and we had a lot of respect for each other.Schools need more like him.

LEE! Great to hear from you again. You're right. I remember the day when we were seniors and I was in the hall with Judy outside of his and Harvey's office. Judy was leaning against the wall, and I was leaning against the wall with my arms outstretched and a LOT of space between Judy and me. Mr. Coursen came out of his office and needless to say, the display of affection received a cold shower.
Tommy
(funny how all my old friends and my relatives still call me that.)
