1909: THE NEW BIJOU OPENS APRIL 17, 1909

The Bijou was always one of my favorite movie houses. Even though it was quite a walk from way over by Kuser Park to the South Clinton Avenue theater, we made the walk on numerous occasions. The Bijou always seemed to get much better movies than our local Gaiety and Greenwood.

Did you know that there was another Bijou theater before this Chambersburg Bijou. Back in the early 20th century another Bijou was located on North Broad near Perry Street. It is complete speculation on my part, but I would bet that the old Garden Theater took up that spot.when the theater closed. The North Broad Street Bijou was a vaudeville theater. Stay tuned. More to come on Trenton's interesting theater history. Look for future posts featuring the "Double B"theater the Nicolette, and others that repose in the deep dark recesses of my "THEATERS-TRENTON" folder.

Hi Tom:)
Yahoo maps driving directions has the Bijou about 1.94 miles from Hartley Avenue. A decent sized walk for adults but kid feet can walk all day. Trenton High was about .97 miles from me on Liberty Street and I often added to that by detouring over to friends homes along the way, plus all the walking inside Trenton High itself which is huge and then the walking at lunch out to Casino or Manninos or Storkeys or Zips then the walk back at lunch then the walk home.
Heck I probubly walked like 4 miles a day 5 days a week just doing that not including football/baseball games at the local parks and walking to and from folks homes in the Burg after school. I bet if you add up all the places you walked as an average including going to the Bijou you get a similar or larger number. Kid Feet can go all day LOL

WE NEVER COUNTED THE DISTANCE, MACK. AND I BET YOU AND YOUR BUDDIES DIDN'T EITHER. WE COULD HAVE TAKEN A TRENTON TRANSIT BUS TO THE RKO BROAD OR THE BIJOU, BUT WE WOULD RATHER SPEND THE DIMES WE SAVED ON GOODIES THAT ALWAYS TASTED BETTER AT THE MOVIES.
