1914: Mr. Hooper of Hooper-Chamberlin-McCabe

That beautiful old building which sits smack dab in the center of "downtown Hamilton Square" is one of my very favorite historic sites in Hamilton. As I sketched that great old building back in the 1980's, I envisioned the old general store as a repository for farmers from Newtown (Robbinsville), Sandtown (Mercerville), and the surrounding area as they came to town for their provisions. Early Hamilton was a farming community. There was a hitching post and a rail in front of the building, and history tells us that the second floor of the sturdy building housed a a harness making shop in the 1800's. Today it is the home of the "Cookie Cottage," and the historic integrity of the building has been preserved.
