When I was in high school, "PS&D" as in Public Speaking and Debating, was the realm of our more intellecually gifted students. They posited on such worldly subjects as, "Should the United States engage in a Lend Lease arrangment with Russia and England?" I suspect that things have changed very little over the years, and I would bet that the students from Steinert in the photo tackled many of the problems of the day.
