1938: NORTH BROAD STREET AT THE BATTLE MONUMENT

Here's another exquisite R.C. Maxwell photo clearly showing "Levin's" old reliable department store. Note how nice and clean the street is in this historic neighborhood.

Tom:
I know you have heard this from me time, and time again. However you have done it one more time; published an article/photo which coincides with a recent incident that affected me.
The photo as shown not only highlights the "Levin" Dept. store, but also the Monument Market, where I worked in the early 50's. Monument Market was owned by Bernie Lavine's dad. I met Bernie there and years later we became partner's in several Real Estate ventures.
Bernie Passed away last week.
It's gettomg eerie Tom.

MIKE, One of the things I love about posting on this very complicated and comprehensive website is posting pages of persons, places and things with which bring back bittersweet memories of younger years to my many visitors. Your comment is like a frosty bottle of Dr. Swett's root beer on a sweltering August day. Thanks for being such a loyal visitor.

Aside from the fine work by the "sweepers" with the wheeled carts the streets of town were indeed clean. Woe to the youngster who was seen tossing a candy or gum wrapper on the sidewalk and there was no "hiding" or denial. After a phone call to your parents you may find yourself doing a bit of "community service". Candy wrappers went into a pocket till you neared a waste can or got home; gum was tossed down a sewer where it would not be stepped in. Nothing like today at all. Snow? You shoveled all of the elderly and didn't dare ask for a nickle and just that smile and a warm thanks made it worth while.
