2012: MEMORIAL DAY: A DAY TO REMEMBER

I will be posting a few military related posts interspersed with my regular menu of local history posts. With the passing of my brother 2 weeks ago, this solemn day will take on a special meaning. Remember: Memorial day isn't just a long weekend around the barby; it is a day of recollection, gratitude and prayer for those who served and some who gave their life for our country.

Apropos of your thoughts, When we were kids, didn't we call this "Decoration Day"?
Time was spent putting wreaths on the graves of Vets, and reflecting on thier sacrifice.

we did indeed refer to it as Decoration Day, Mike. At Kuser School and Hamilton High, I spent many happy Friday assemblies singing songs we no longer hear: COLUMBIA THE GEM OF THE OCEAN, CAMPING ON THE OLD CAMP GROUND, WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER, OVER THERE, MY COUNTRY 'TIS OF THEE, AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, and many many more.

Memorial Day 2012 has a very special meaning to me this year as I recall the recent passing of my older brother Len who had 35 missions over Nazi Germany in a B-24. In his last hours, he wondered what he would say when God asked him about all those innocent men,
