A Photo from "Retrospect;" Year Unknown

This is one of my favorite photos of the front facade of Hamilton High School. It was here that we entered into the auditorium on those nights when the students were presenting an operetta or a play. Out of the picture is my favorite classroom, Room 300 where Miss Louise Baird held forth with our music class.

1987: Mary Correia's Hornet Outfit

ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10, 10 BEING THE ULTIMATE, I CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE AT LEAST A 9 WHEN IT COMES TO "THINGS COMPUTER." HOWEVER, THERE IS ONE SITUATION WHICH IS QUITE PERPLEXING AND VERY ANNOYING. THE PHOTO ACCOMPANYING THIS POST HAS BEEN SCANNED AT THE SAME RESOLUTION, STORED IN THE SAME FOLDER, AND GIVEN THE SAME "JPEG" SUFFIX AS ALL THE SCANS ON MY SITE. IN CLICKING THE IMAGE TO ENLARGE IT, I AM AT A COMPLETE LOSS TO EXPLAIN WHY I GET A MESSAGE "FILE NOT FOUND - ERROR 404" IS A COMPLETE MYSTERY. SORRY I CAN'T RESOLVE THIS VERY ANNOYING PROBLEM WHICH ONLY CROPS UP ON RARE OCCASIONS.
Here's a graphic and living example of that good old fashioned ingenuity for which Hamilton "Hornets" are noted! Mary Correia, if by some chance you are a visitor to my site, let me know whatever happened to your hornet costume.

EARLY COMPUTING

COMPUTERS: YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY, BABY!
Check out this ad for a state of the art computer of just 20 years ago. The Atari, the Apple, and how about the Radio Shack TRS80, better known as the "Trash 80?" The first computer I recall used a system known as "CPM." It was a system similar to MS-Dos, but much more complicated. DON'T MISS THE "HOT" SOFTWARE AVAILABLE FOR THE ATARI AS SHOWN IN THE BOTTOM OF THE AD! The screen on that Atari would be a monochrome screen and the letters one would type would appear with jagged edges, far removed from today's hi-definition monitors.

1986: Clifford Harbourt

The NOTABLE PERSONS file wouldn't be complete without the inclusion of Mr. Clifford Harbourt. As you can see by his mini bio, Mr. Harbourt was a very civic minded man, and an asset to the community of Hamilton.

1986: Mayor Jack Rafferty at Mercerville School 75th Birthday

Here's a photo from the MERCERVILLE SCHOOL folder in the Hamilton Library's Local History Collection. That would make Mercerville School 95 years old in this year of 2006.

1987: Tom Glover's "Pulitzer," Part I

One would think that I was the only recipient of awards that long ago evening in 1987. Not so! Awards were streaming down like falling rain. Above is the article accompanying the awards ceremony, and detailing the many local personalities who received them.Bold

1987: Tom Glover's "Pulitzer" Prize Part II

Hey, I'm really proud of the fact that my nostalgia/history writings were such a success while I was a columnist for Jack Lacy's late, great, Mercer Messenger. My target audience, as is the case today, was for the mature, over 60 generation who remember the good times. I miss seeing Editor Wayne Davis, a fellow radio amateur, and Russ Roberts. Russ is quite active as a speaker, with many appearances at Kuser Mansion this year. Check him out. As for the late Frenchy DuFour, he was a gentleman, and I miss him.

1987 Photos around the Bromley area

Back before the advent of digital cameras, I had a little Canon point and shoot 35 millimeter camera. I can hardly believe how primitive photography was back then, when compared to
the ease with which we can take a picture. I remember shooting a roll of 24 and another of about 12 on that 35 mm Canaon, and I would guess that more than half of them were incorrectly exposed. With a digital camera, you don't wait. A bad snap can be erased and you are given multiple chances to get the exposure correct.

1987: Mayor Rafferty's Street Patrol

Back before the socialogical epidemic we know of as the gang problem, former Mayor Jack Rafferty was ahead of his time with an order to the police department to patrol high crime areas.

1947: Variety is the Spice of Life

I was truly impressed by the number of clubs which were on the Hamilton Campus back in the 1940's and 50's. You will be seeing more of them in future posts. Some very intriguing clubs will be posted, including the Radio Club, The Ettiquette Club, Chess and Checkers, Photography, and many more. Please forgive me for embellishing the graphic with a few little vignette photos and that ad for "Toone Towne." Remember Toone Towne? We all went there for a sandwich, a coke or a milk shake. Every time I watched "Happy Days" on TV, I thought of Toone Towne.....but then again, in every one of the 50 or more times I watch "Grease," I thought of my high school sweetheart, Judy Britton who was the epitome of "Sandy!"

1947 Retrospice (Re-tro-spee-chay)

Even though I dressed up the 1947 yearbook with an orange and black border, I still think the basic book is one of the most attractive in the set.
