1951: TERRY DEAN'S HHS

THIS INCREDIBLE ENGRAVING WAS TURNED OUT BY ONE OF OUR MANY CLASS OF 1951 ARTISTS. TERRY OUTDID HERSELF WITH THIS EXCELLENT RENDERING IN PEN AND INK OF OUR ALMA MATER. THIS WILL MAKE A GREAT TEE SHIRT TRANSFER FOR SUMMER WEAR.

A VERY FAMILIAR SNAP SHOT

I WOULDN'T EVEN GUESS HOW MANY TIMES I CLIMBED THESE STEPS. TO A "NOSTALGIAC" SUCH AS I, THIS ENTRANCEWAY RECALLS THE HAPPY YEARS OF MY YOUTH WHEN I ENTERED THOSE PORTALS WITH MY MOTHER AND FATHER IN LAW, MY DEAR WIFE, AND MY 3 CHILDREN.

2007: MSGR. JOSEPH FERRANTE; ONE OF THE BEST

HOW WE ALL MISSED MSGR. JOE WHEN HE LEFT US IN SUCH AN UNTIMELY FASHION. HE HAD THAT SPECIAL WAY ABOUT HIM WHICH WOULD MOTIVATE THOSE AROUND HIM TO HELP TO BETTER THE PARISH. DURING HIS TIME AS PASTOR OF ST. ANTHONY'S, THE BEAUTIFUL RESTORATION TOOK PLACE.

2007: ST. ANTHONY TRENTON - MEMORIES

IT'S A SAD FACT THAT I AM ONE OF THE FEW FROM MY AGE GROUP WHO IS INVOLVED WITH COMPUTING. THAT UNFORTUNATE SITUATION RESULTS IN MANY ST. ANTHONY PARISHIONERS WHO WORKED WITH ME DURING THE TIME WHEN MSGR. MICHAEL P. MCCORRISTIN WAS OUR PASTOR NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE THIS POSTING . "THE IRON MIKE" WAS QUITE FRUGAL, AND AS A RESULT, WE PTA FOLKS FROM THE 1960'S AND 1970'S BECAME QUITE ADEPT AT WASHING AND WAXING THE ANTIQUATED ASPHALT FLOORS IN THE BASEMENT, PAINTING EQUALLY ANTIQUATED GRAMMAR SCHOOL WALLS, MOWING THE RECTORY LAWN WHICH ALSO SERVED AS A STORAGE AREA FOR MONSIGNOR'S MANY CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIR PROJECTS, ETC. ETC. THE PHOTO ACCOMPANYING THIS POST SHOWS THE EXQUISITELY RE-APPOINTED ST. ANTHONY CHURCH BASEMENT. HOW WE WOULD HAVE LOVED TO MAINTAIN THAT BEAUTIFUL VINYL TILE.....AND HOW ABOUT THOSE TABLES FOLKS? HOW MANY VISITORS TO THIS SITE REMEMBER THE RICKETY TABLES WE HAD....MANY OF WHICH WERE KNOWN TO COLLAPSE RIGHT ONTO A BINGO PLAYER'S LAP? AHH....THE MEMORIES. I'M SURE MONSIGNOR IS LOOKING DOWN ON ALL OF THIS AND ADMIRING THE BEAUTY WHICH HAS EVOLVED IN HIS CHURCH.....THE CHURCH WHICH WAS RESTORED DURING THE TENURE OF MSGR. JOE FERRANTE. DOES ANY VISITOR TO THIS SITE REMEMBER MY "MEN OF ACTION?" LET'S SEE HOW MANY I CAN REMEMBER..... LARRY ALLEN, BUD FOLEY, FRANK ANAMA, JIM MALONEY, CARMEN CONSIGLIO AND...HEY, THERE WERE OTHERES BUT MY MEMORY BANK SEEMS TO BE STUCK IN NEUTRAL RIGHT ABOUT NOW. THOSE GALLANT PARISHIONERS WHO PAINTED, SCRUBBED AND WAXED FLOORS, BAGGED THE GARBAGE AT OUR BASEMENT NEW YEARS' EVE AND ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARTIES? I SURE DO!

1951: Anna "Annie" Provost: Robson: 1933-2007

I just received a notification from Ann's husband that Annie passed away on February 3rd. Always ready with that smile and a really winning personality, Annie will be missed. Till we meet again in the final reunion in the sky, Annie, see you then.

She is doing better today with pain for the first time.
They are being cautious with Carol because of her history of hemmoraging and stroke.
Hopefully she will be home Thurs. or Friday.
I`m at the hospital staying with Carol.

HORNET ALUMNI HELP NEEDED!

Following is an email I received from Pat Gardner, HHS PTA President, soliciting assistance from Hornet alumni. Does your reunion treasury have a surplus? If so, what better place to send it?
==================================
Dear Hamilton High School West Alumni, Hello. My name is Pat Gardner and I am the current President of the HHW PTA. I am writing on behalf of the Hamilton High School West PTA to request your support of the PTA Scholarship Drive. The HHW PTA does not perform traditional fundraising activities like selling candy, pizza or candles. At the high school level there is so much fundraising that goes on for sports, clubs and extracurricular activities, it is difficult to compete with these larger groups. How does the PTA raise money? The PTA receives a portion of the membership dues and we work at the Blockhouse during home football games. This year with the rainy fall weather and no Thanksgiving Day home game we find ourselves under budget. Last year the PTA gave out scholarships to eight deserving graduates. Rather than cut back on the number of scholarships we offer, the PTA decided to reach out to the HHW alumni and ask for donations. The PTA needs to raise $2000. All donations would be earmarked for the scholarship drive. Donationas are tax deductable. There is no limit on the amount. Donations can come from individual alumni or from a whole class. Checks should be made out to HHW PTA and in the memo section please put Scholarship Drive. To acknowledge all those who participate in the PTA Scholarship Drive, a banner listing all the supporters will be displayed at the blockhouse during next years football games. Please send donations to:Helga Travaglini HHW PTA Treasurer2720 S. Clinton Ave.Hamilton, NJ 08610 Thanks for your consideration. If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact me at tpgardner@aol.com. Pat GardnerHHW PTA President

Following is an email I received from Pat Gardner, HHS PTA President, soliciting assistance from Hornet alumni. Does your reunion treasury have a surplus? If so, what better place to send it?
==================================
SWITLIK PARACHUTES

SWITLIK PARACHUTE COMPANY: Whenever I think of Switlik's I think of one of my very dear friends from my old neighborhood. Carrie and Steve Horvath lived on the opposite corner of Hartley Avenue all during the years of my youth, and Carrie is still there. Steve was an old time employee of the Switlik Company, and in later years, a fellow member of the late, lamented St. Anthony Holy Name Society. I can see Steve, now, with the ever present Stogie and the always pleasant sense of humor.

1924: Ancient Order of Hibernians Carnival

Even back in 1924, Hamilton and Olden Avenues were the focal point of activities relating to the Sons and Daughters of Erin, as can be seen by this Ancient Order of Hibernians Carnival advertisementThis Saturday, March 10, 2007, the annual St. Patrick's Day parade will kick off from the front entrance of St. Anthony's Church in Hamilton. I hope to see you there!

GOODBYE MY DEAR FRIEND, FATHER LIAM MINOGUE

It is with a tear in my eye that I heard of the passing of Father Liam Minogue. Father Liam was one of the most charasmatic men of cloth I encountered over my 50 years in the faith. Father came over in the 1960's with many of my favorite Roman Catholic Priests from Ireland. They were, one and all, a tribute to the faith. I will carry the treasured memory of those St. Patrick's Day parties we had when Judy and I were President and Vice President of St. Anthony's PTA. Father Liam, Father Mike Walsh, Father Brendan Williams and Father Patrick Fitzpatrick were the light of the life of Monsignor Michael P. McCorristin. Goodbye Father, the influence you had in the life of the Glover family and hundreds of others in the Hamilton/Trenton area will live on. May the Lord welcome you into his kingdom.

Circa 1912: Trenton's City Hall

This exquisite example of vintage architecture has always been one of my favorite Trenton landmarks. With its beautiful clock tower and mansard roof, the building is one of the few remaining historical classics which hasn't been replaced with a glass-encrusted monstrosity.

1990's: Tom Glover Sr. and Jr's "WINGS OF SONG!"

How I miss my "WINGS OF SONG" singers! For a while back there in the 1980's 90's while the Reverend Monsignors Jim McManimon, and Joseph Ferrante were at the helm of St. Anthony Parish in Hamilton, our talented singers were assigned the task of trying to bring a younger segment of the local community in to church. It worked! For a number of years we provided the music for the Saturday afternoon 5:30 Mass. However, musical tastes change, and the new Pastor and his sidekick decided our music was not their music, and "Wings of Song" was no more! But we did make beautiful music right from the scriptures! Ask any old timer who attended those Saturday services. I am still met by folks from my years at St. Anthony who tell me how much they missed the beautiful and sacred music we sang.

THE PHOTO ABOVE WAS TAKEN AT ONE OF THE PRAYER SERVICES AT OUR LADY OF SORROWS CHURCH.

1945: General Plating Co. - Hamilton Avenue

Anyone passing by the American Steel and Wire plant on Hamilton Avenue will remember this familiar landmark. It was located just up the stret from the Steel and Wire plant. Like must industry in the city of Trenton, alas, "it ain't no more."

1940: The Late, Great N.J. State Fair

The preceeding scan relating to the General Motors plant and the accompanying graphic relative to the late lamented New Jersey State Fair stand as mute testimony to just a few of the very valuable resources we have lost in the Mercer County area. One of the more interesting folders in my Local History Collection at the Hamilton Library are the many articles and ads which illustrate the early years in Hamilton Township. One of the programs I will be doing at the Kuser Mansion this year, is a thumbnail history of that great old institution. There will be a digital "slide show" of the many interesting events which occurred there over the years from "Lucky Teter" to horse racing, midget car racing, etc. Keep an eye out for announcements here and in the local press.

TRENTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE "TRENTON" MAGAZINE

1938: Ternstedt Division, General Motors Corp.

They pulled up stakes and left us with "brown fields," and are obviously taking their good old time to clean up the site, but those of us who remember that great old factory on Parkway Avenue in Ewing have fond memories of Grumman "Avengers" being test flown over the area as "Eastern Aircraft" took over the plant during WWII. In my own personal experience dealing with Ternstedt Divison, I have fond memories of a true gentleman by the name of Walt Lawyer who was the purchasing agent back in the late 40's and early '50s.
the Trenton area was so very excited when General Motors broke ground for that huge plant back in 1938.

1942: The New WTTM

FROM THE PAGES OF THE
TRENTON CHAMBER
OF COMMERCE MAGAZINE, "TRENTON"
WTTM went on the air in Trenton smack dab in the early years of World War II. They were a godsend during the unsettling era when we were "jittery"with talk of blackouts, espionage and fifth columnists. The great old local station for reasons unknown pulled out of Trenton and relinquished the classy call sign which was quite easy to remember. WTTM joined WTNJ and WOAX in folding up and either moving or giving up the broadcasting business. Good old WBUD remains a local broadcasting legend. Do you remember when they started back in 1946, broadcasting from Pryor's Drug Store on the corner of Bridge Street and South Pennsylvania Avenue in Morrisville? Do you remember Bus Saidt broadcasting the Trenton Giants Interstate Leage baseball games, sponsored by "Stan Coney, Re-built Engines?" If you do, you have silver in your hair!

FRANK METZGER: 1937-2007

Mr. Frank Metzger a fellow Hornet from Hamilton High class of 1954

passed away this week. Frank was a prominent Hamiltonian who

served on the Hamilton Township Council back in the 1980's. His close

friend and colleague, Jack Lacy, former Hamilton Council President

sends this email which is a poignant eulogy to Frank. Many thanks,
Jack.

Tom...
I sent you Frank's official obit from today's paper. Sorry, but haven't found any appropriate photos yet. As I said in an earlier post, much of the material from that part of my life was lost in my houase fire in '98. But, I'll keep looking.
If you'd like to include some quotes from me, here goes:
"I've known Frank since we were in Hamilton High together although then I knew him as the big brother of my class mate, Charlie or "Bub" as he was known to his family. Later Frank became one of my principal insurance advisers providing all my family with Allstate coverage of our automobiles, then Tenant Homeowners coverage and finally full-scale Homeowners Insurance. I'll never forget him urging that we incorporate a (then) new-fangled rider in the homeowners policy that increased the value of the home each year according to its market value. In 1998 when our house burned down Frank's foresight so many years before was a Godsend."
"When we became colleagues and two-term running mates on the Hamilton Township Council I was forever impressed with Frank's uncanny ability to listen to hours upon hours of public testimony and debate on an issue and then summarize all of that in one or two sentences. He had a special talent for recognizing the core differences and stating them very simply. In an age when politicians often spend as long summarizing as the debate to which they are referring Frank's one or two succinct sentences were a most refreshing change. And, that's from a former politician who has been kindly referred to as 'verbose' while others have harsher descriptions of my orations."
"No matter what the situation Frank's sense of humor was exquisite. He could see and verbalize the humor in just about any set of conditions and that talent certainly served often to lighten what otherwise might have been a ponderous calamity."
Hope those help some...
Jack
