1950: S.S. KRESGE:THE MEMORIES LINGER

There's a very soft spot in my heart for Kresge's five and dime. I spent many Saturday mornings in downtown Trenton with my Mom as a boy. A trip "up town" to pay the electric bill always resulted in a stop at Kresge's and the Woolworth five and dime. This photo has been enlarged to the maximum and extracted from a very detailed State and Broad Street R.C. Maxwell photo. Precious memories!

Hi Tom: Is this the 5&Dime where you went in on State St. and came out on a lower level? I can still remember the scents of popcorn, ect. I need these memories today. Thanks.

HI TOM.....THE 5 AND 10'S WERE MY FAVOTITE DOWN TOWN STORES. ESPECIALLY THE ONE THAT CAME OUT BY THE CAPITOL THEATRE. DURING THE 1930'S THEY HAD HOT DOGS AND ROOT BEER FOR 15 CENTS AND FOR ANOTHER 25 CENTS YOU CAN SEE A SHOW AND MOVIE AT THE CAPITOL. WHAT A DEAL! REGARDS

Can anyone refresh Sally and my memory? As I recall you went in the State Street entrance and exited on So. Broad Street? Hey, c'mon; it's been well over 65 years for me!

Tom - I vividly remember that Kresge's 5 & 10 had an entrance on State St and then down a few steps inside the store to another level which came out to the Broad St entrance, next to the movie theater on Broad. Woolworth's 5 & 10 also had a main entrance on State St and a lower level, reached by a long flight of stairs at the back of the store which came out into the parking lot on Front St across from Lit Bros side door. Many memories! Lakeside Girl

Hi Lakeside Girl: Thanks for clearing that up. It was Kresge's that I was thinking about. I remember going down a few steps to another level. The lower level had a photo booth where I took my picture for my Rider College application. Many memories to you too.

Very sad time when Woolworth's closed in Trenton, however pretty fascinating as they hadn't really updated the store in years & they had merchandise that had probably been in stock for decades. Wish I had bought some of it!! Mary Anne Ozmon-Grove
