1946: THE TRENTON OF MY YOUTH!

Not only my youth but the youth of many visitors who remember when a shopping trip to downtown Trenton was to journey to a live and vital town with a large variety of stores. Yards, Dunham's, Stacy Sport Shop, Nevius Voorhees, Carlton Clothes, F.W. and R.A. Donnelly, A.S. Beck Shoes....how many can you remember? These were indeed the golden years of Trenton before the 1968 riots and the advent of shopping malls.

IT'S ME AGAIN TOM.... TRYING TO FIND PARKING SPACE WHEN I WAS ON PARCEL POST DELIVERIES WITH THE POST OFFICE WAS VERY HARD DOWN TOWN. ALL THESE PROBLEMS WERE GONE AFTER MY BROTHER LOU AND I LEFT THE POST OFFICE AND BUILT THE HAMILTON BOWLING LANES ON ROUT 33 IN 1954. MEMORIES GALORE.

AS WE AGE, MEMORIES BECOME MORE BEAUTIFUL WITH EACH PASSING DAY, WEEK, MONTH, AND YEAR, RALPH. I'M REALLY HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO SHARE MEMORIES WITH OTHERS WHO APPRECIATE THEM.

I MIGHT ADD TOM...THERE ARE NOT MANY CITIES WHO HAVE CEMETARIES DOWN TOWN. I WALKED THROUGH THE ONE ON STATE ST. FOR THE FIRST TIME AND WAS SURPRIZED AT HOW OLD SOME OF THOSE MEMORIALS ARE. MORE PEOPLE SHOULD DO THE SAME AND CHERISH THE MEMORIES. REGARDS.

BOND'S CLOTHES WAS MY FAVORITE MEM'S STORE, SUITS WITH 2 PAIR OF PANTS FOR 25 DOLLARS WAS REALLY A GREAT DEAL. COMPARE THAT WITH THE COST OF A SUIT TODAY. THOSE WERE THE DAYS.

I worked at Lits right after high school until I was more or less fired (1957). The Downtown was magic. It was alive. Also the Jewish section around Union and Market was wonderful and full of different characters and members of many ethnic groups. Urban renewal equalled urban destruction!
Trenton's downslide was due to politicians and leaders without vision who were corrupt. They were almost all white!!!Let us be honest about who the real culprits were. Nevertheless, this website glows with beautiful pictures and nostalgia for those of us who left Trenton many years ago but keep it in a special place in our hearts!
