1934: THE TRENTON EAGLES FOOTBALL TEAM

See how much you can learn when you page through this web site? Whoever knew that there was a football team known as the Trenton Eagles? Above is a 1934 news photo of the team, and lo and behold, there's another Lucarella sportsman in the photo. I have copied, enlarged, and pasted "Chick" Lucarella and I assume that would be our own Ralph Lucarella's brother Chuck. Now you know why the Hamilton Township Public Library's Local History Collection is sub-titled,
"Local History With A Personal Touch!"

HI TOM....THE TRENTON EAGLES WERE WELL KNOWN DURING THAT TIME. THEY WERE PLAYERS MOSTLY FROM EAST AND NORTH TRENTON. MY BROTHER LOU MAY HAVE PLAYED ALONG WITH THE OTHERS FROM THE TRENTON HIGH SQUAD OF THAT YEAR. JIMMY PETRUSSIO WAS ONE OF THE STAR PLAYERS WITH THEM AND TRENTON HIGH. TOMMY MANGINE FROM FULTON ST. WAS ANOTHER I RECALL. SAMMY CORTI, THE BOXER, WAS ALSO ACTIVE WITH THE TEAM. THEY WERE AN INDEPENDENT TEAM FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS. MY YOUNGER BROTHER CHUCK NEVER PLAYED WITH THEM. BEST REGARDS AND KEEP UP YOUR FINE WORK OF THE PAST.

Althoug the Trenton Eagles were befire my time ( born in 1933), Jjimmy Petruccio worked with me at City Hall in Trenton back in the early 60's. A big quiet unasumming guy, Jimmy nonetheless would regale us with stories of the "Storied Eagles team".

Many of the players and coaches shown herein, went on to become prominent citizens of Trenton.
Chuck, Ralph's brother would have still been in diapers when this photo was taken, since he was at THS when I was there, albeit a year or two ahead of me.
