1949 Ca. SOUTH BROAD STREET APPROACHING THE CIRCLE AT WHITE HORSE

Emil's Bake Shoppe, the White Horse Diner, and Gropp's White Horse Tavern; What more can we ask for in this splendid view of the South Broad Street-White Horse area? Note that this and the photo below are not from the Duke University R.C. Maxwell collection, rather they are in the "HAMILTON-VIEWS OF" folder in the Hamilton Library Local History Collection.

That reminded of some fishing trips with my Dad. We would take the bus to the circle and walk down the hill of 206 to a place on Crosswicks Creek. I believe it was a fellow who rented boats and sold live bait of killies and worms and his name was Ray Londhal or Londell.

Ed, is was Ray Londahl, and the freshwater little fishies were minnies (or monnows). Killies were for fluking in salt water.

My Dad and I fished just about every inch of Crosswick's Creek before I was five, then we began exploring the ponds out beyond Allentown.

Remember Capri Kitchens just beyond the White Horse non-circle?

Who went horseback riding at Carney Rose's?

I had family who lived down the road from Carney Rose and we loved to walk down and look at the horses. Family lived on Dewey so I suppose The Rose Riding Academy was on what became Independence Avenue? Also we were amazed at the new sewage plant and put a damper on our fishing down there.

My parents used to get horsemeat from Carney Rose's to feed our cats. This must have been in the early 50's. EWWW.

Ed,SjBill,CathyJ:

I wrangled horese for Carney & Millie Rose from age 10 on to 16.
The Street name offically was "Hobson Ave." Independance Ave. ran up to it. Hobson went to South Broad St. near the Cemetary. Use to take 20 horses up to the Pocono Resorts and take the Tenderfeet out on Trail Rides. Carney gave me the name of "Lash", since I became proficient with a whip as did the than hero "Lash LaRue"
I worked the horses around WhiteCity Lake each Spring, and Fall, and off to the Poconos in the Summer.
Winter Time I helped Carney in the Slaughter house, since I grew up in the meat packing industry in South Trenton. This was all in the 40's, and early 50's.
Many people did not know that Carney's real name was "Frank Scigliano. His sister was on WBUD for years, also using the name as Thresa Rose.
Depsite my working with him in the Dog food end of the business, it bothered me no end to at one point ride a horse, and in the same day, put them to sleep for butchering.

Some things you never forget.

I'm 25, and Grandparents lived in the white house... Two down after you cross the road that now leads to the water plant on Emaline Ave. My Grandpa built that house. .. I remember spending my summers there and he would walk me to the corner to see the horses at Carney Roses. No more horses anymore, and windows are boarded and Painted to look functional. Memories :)
