1939: DOWNTOWN TRENTON ON A WINTER DAY

From the Duke University Archives' R.C. Maxwell collection, this view of Trenton way back when I was 6 years old. This is the State and Broad that I have written about in over 20 columns over the years. As I enlarged this photo to its maximum size, I imagined myself in front of the Wilson store, and making a left turn to go down the hill to Goldberg's for a visit to TOYLAND and their magnificent display of toys. Ahh, the memories! The original is in sepia; I have converted it to gray scale and as I slowly scanned across the screen, all those familiar old haunts came into clear focus: the Savoy Restaurant, the Stacy Trent and Hildebrecht hotels, Doctor Silberman, and so many others. Compared to the Trenton of today, is it any wonder that old geezers such as I long for a return to a safe, clean, and relatively crime free State and Broad?

What a prosperous time it was for Trenton ! I'm retired from TFD and these are not the scenes I have been used to seeing over the past 25 years.

Tom: Love these pictures of old time Trenton. I asked Mack is there a website to view more?
