REMEMBERING ALL THOSE BASEBALL CARDS WE THREW AWAY!

Click on the link below and take a nostalgic trip back to the less complicated times of our childhood.

In this week's "Sentimental Journey" column take a trip back to our childhood as I recall the joys of collecting and "flipping" baseball cards. We'll be visiting the years when a movie star came with every 5 cent Dixie ice cream cup. Enjoy a nostalgic trip back to the less complicated times of our childhood.

Hi Tom: I don't remember the lids but I had some kind of buttons I sent away for. I think they might have been Roy Rogers. I took them to Jr. 3 and someone stole them. So light fingers were at work in those days too. Regards.

HI TOM....I WONDER IF ANYONE REMEMBERS THE KIDS WHO MADE THINGS FROM PEACH PITS. THEY WOULD SCRAPE THE PITS UNTIL THEY FORMED OBJECTS. I RECALL SOME BEAUTIFUL RINGS THEY MADE ALONG WITH MANY OTHER THINGS. SOME OF THOSE KIDS REALLY HAD MUCH TALENT. BEST REGARDS.

YES, RALPH. I DO REMEMBER PEACH PIT CARVING. IT TOOK A LOT OF PATIENCE AND A SHARP "XACTO" KNIFE. I ALSO REMEMBER THE GIRLS USED TO DO A "CORK WOOL" RUG. THEY TOOK AN EMPTY COTTON SPOOL, STOOD IT ON END, AND TAPPED 4 EVENLY SPACED BRADS ON IT. THEN THEY WOULD THREAD A STRAND OF WOOL THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE SPOOL, WIND IT AROUND THE BRADS, AND ULTIMATELY COME OUT WITH A 3/8" DIAMETER ROPE MADE OF WOOL. IF THE PROCESS WAS CONTINUED, A RUG COULD BE MADE. I SAID IT WAS BASICALLY A GIRL THING, BUT I, AND A COUPLE OF MY BUDDIES ALSO TRIED OUR HAND AT IT.

Tom: One of my fond memories of those halcyon days was making a scooter out of a "Wooden" soda box, a lenght of 2"x4" one old not used roller skate that came apart at the middle, and 2 short pieces of wood for a steering wheel. The real coup de gras was the "V" for Victory over the Axis enemy made of all one brand soda cap nailed to the front of the box. Today the grandkids have electric miniture golf carts to ride around at the beach house. Boy they don't know what they are missing! LOL Mike

ONCE AGAIN, MIKE KUZMA BRINGS BACK ONE OF THOSE FORGOTTEN VESTIGES OF A GENERATION THAT MADE DO WITH OLD ROLLER SKATES, SODA CASES, TIN CANS (FOR HEADLIGHTS) AND OTHER ACCESSORIES FOR A KID'S "AUTO SCOOTER."
OUT IN THE STICKS WHERE I GREW UP, THERE WERE NO CONCRETE SIDEWALKS, WE HAD TO OPT FOR WHAT WE CALLED A "CHUGGY;" A FOUR WHEELED (WHEELS FROM A BABY CARRIAGE FROM THE TOWNSHIP DUMPS ON PATTERSON AVENUE IN HAMILTON) VEHICLE STEERED WITH ROPE WHICH WE COULD RIDE ON GRASSY FIELDS AND ASPHALT OR DIRT ROADS. MIKE, YOU'RE A SPECIAL GUY, AND YOUR MEMORY IS MUCH LIKE MINE AS YOU RECALL MANY OF THE WONDERFUL YEARS OF OUR YOUTH.
