1935: WHEN U.S. ROUTE 1 WAS MERELY A RURAL HIGHWAY

U.S. Route 1, that highway that is rife with bumper to bumper traffic during morning and evening commuting times, and also during many hours of the day, was supposedly laid on the approximate trail of Indians way back in pre-colonial times. The photo above is a complete mystery as to the vantage point of the camera man, It is nearly impossible to envision that busy highway as it appears in the photo above, when compared with all the traffic, jug handles, and row after row of malls and businesses lined up on either side of the thoroughfare.

HI TOM.....THE LAST TIME WE VISITED TRENTON WE STAYED AT THE COMFORT INN ON U.S.1 AND IT WAS A MESS TRYING TO GET THERE. IT WAS BY THE QUAKER BRIDGE MALL AND YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE CAR DEALERS TO GET THERE. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE ARE NOT MORE MOTELS IN A CITY THAT IS THE CAPITOL OF THE STATE.

And just try to find the entrance to Red Roof Inn barreling along Rte 1 with a huge truck tailgating you -- many a dark night my husband and I ran up over the curb and across the grass to get off the highway to the relative safety of the motel parking lot. And reversing direction thru Quaker Bridge Mall was another challenge. Ah, Rte 1 and Trenton, how I love it still.

THANKS FOR THAT, SALLY. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM TRYING TO FIND THE RAYMOUR AND FLANNIGAN FURNITURE STORE ON ROUTE 1. I ONLY TRAVEL ROUTE 1 AS A LAST RESORT. I TRIED FINDING THE R & F SIGN WITH CARS TAILGATING ME.BOTTOM LINE: I PASSED THE SIGN AND ENTERED A NEIGHBORING MALL WITH ACCESS TO THE R & F, PARKING LOT.

From Sally Gilman:
Tom: Good move -- you lucked out on your trip along Route 1. It's esp. bad at night and not for the faint of heart.

Tom,

I think this is facing north near the Sarnoff Research Office...in particular where Fisher Place meets Route 1. Fisher Place is located between Washington Road/571 and Harrison Road. The house in the picture is still there.
