You're packing on the years if you remember those World War II rationing rules. Everything was rationed from sugar to meat to one of our most needed commodities: gasoline. Depending upon your status, you had a specific amount of gas per week allotted to your family. The common ordinary citizen had the "A" card as shown above stuck on the windshield of his auto. The "B" card holder could get more if he or she proved that she had to have more gas for commuting, etc. There were special windshield stickers for "E" mergency workers, etc.

1943: REMEMBERING GASOLINE RATIONING

HI TOM.....PROBABLY THE WORSE THING RATIONED WERE CIGARETTES, FOR THE SMOKERS. I RECALL MAILING CARTONS TO TO MY FAMILY. WE BOUGHT THEM FOR 50 CENTS A CARTON AT THE CANTEEN. GAS STAMPS WERE A BIG RACKET AMONG THE BAD GUYS. I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY GOT THEM BUT THEY WENT FOR PLENTY. WHILE OVERSEAS, WE HAD POWDERED MILK AND POTATOES AND MOST OF OUR MEAT CAME FROM NEW ZEALAND. IT WAS GREAT TO TASTE OUR MILK WHEN WE GOT BACK. IT WAS A TOUGH PERIOD AND I GUESS I'M PRETTY LUCKY TO MAKE IT BACK. BEST REGARDS.
