1939: THE STACY THEATER
It certainly wasn't a "first run" theater, but they always seemed to book some of the best movies that appealed to the masses. I think I attended the Stacy maybe 2 or 3 times. When I was a boy, the nearby Gaiety and Greenwood were the theaters of our neighborhood, with an occasional walk to the RKO Broad or the Bijou (By the way, when that latter theater was named, it was supposed to have been referred to as the "BEE-ZHOO," but all my contemporaries called it the "BY-JOE;" remember?
rayfromvillapark said... Hi Tom, Love this photo. The two parked cars in the photo are a 1939 Plymouth on the left and a 1940 Chevrolet on the right. The movies played at the Stacy are what I think was referred to as B movies. Anybody agree with terminology? Did the Stacy have a balcony?
I CAN'T HONESTLY RECALL WHETHER THERE WAS A BALCONY OR NOT, RAY. I'M SURE THERE WILL BE A RESPONSE AT SOME POINT.

HI TOM....I'M PRETTY SURE THE STACY THEATRE DID'NT HAVE A BALCONY. WE WENT THERE ON OCCASSIONS AND WE WERE BALCONY PEOPLE AT THE TIME. DOWN THE STREET, AT THE STATE THEATRE, THE MOST WE COULD AFFORD WAS THE SECOND BALCONY, WHICH WAS THE THIRD FLOOR. WE CALLED IT HEAVEN. THE BIJOU HAD A VERY SMALL BALCONY, THE PARK THEATRE HAD NONE BUT THE RKO BROAD HAD A LARGE ONE. IT FELT SO GOOD WHEN WE WERE ABLE TO AFFORD THE FIRST FLOOR, WHICH WERE CALLED THE ORCHESTRA SEATS AT MOST THEATRES. BEST REGARDS.
Tom:
The Stacy Theatre was another of those with so many memories. As I recall, there was a balcony, small but "cozy" in which I spent a good deal of my youth; enjoying myself!
The best place in town was just a few door down, Mike Dertousas (sp) "Famous Restuarant" Renie was my favorite waitress. Always wound up there after a night of dancing and beer for a late, late or early early breakfast.
It was a meeting place from ther we would drive to Seaside, or AC to keep the party going.
Don't know how we did it.
A beer on a hot day now would kill me.
