Out in the country, we engaged in that annual ritual of "gettin' under the hose." We spent hours during those hot and humid central Jersey summers. We lashed the hose on the clothesline and had a delightful shower, or perhaps a rousing game of "high waters," or the most fun of all, sitting in a wash tub under the hose.

1938: CHAMBERSBURG OVERCOMING A HEATWAVE

is being taken as many are looking to where the picture was taken...likely the 2nd or 3rd story of a building across the street:))

YOU ARE RIGHT. I ONLY WISH THE CAMERA HAD BEEN A BIT CLOSER. I WOULD BE THAT THERE ARE MANY VISITORS TO OUR SITES WHO ARE IN THAT PHOTO.

Wow! Those days before air conditioing were something, Leave it to Fred Cooper to come up with the use of fire hydrants to cool off. Fred and Bill Cooper were two of the best people City Hall could produce. They were in charge of playgrounds and very active in the recreation dept. As kids, we counted on them to provide things to do during those tough depression years.
