THE BOY SCOUTS CELEBRATE A CENTENNIAL: FEBRUARY 1910 - FEBRUARY 2010Those of you who have followed my columns over the years, and other locally oriented exploits, will recall those times when I mentioned Ernest Thompson Seton as one of my very favorite boyhood authors. How I loved to read of his stories of animals as they lived in their natural habitats! The most memorable of the books I read by this outstanding author is "Wild Animals I Have Known." Seton has that special knack in his story telling that places you right in the den of "Lobo" the wolf. The article is from a loose, un-identified source clipping in my collection. It tells of Sir. Baden Powell's founding of the organization over in Great Britain in 1908. (I inserted the 1986 Boy Scout Handbooks.) The organization was so successful, it ultimately branched out to other countries, including the U.S.A. and Trenton.

Lots of people or groups in history took firms stands for what they believed to be right. That doesn't mean they are deserving of admiration. The Nazis took a firm stand. Muslim extremists take firm stands. The murderer of the abortion clinic doctor in Kansas takes a firm stand. White segregationists took firm stands.
I enjoy reading this blog frequently, but I am very disappointed that you would express admiration for the hateful stance this group is taking. As a historian, you should know better. When in history has fostering such hate and discrimination ever led to anything good? Enjoying history doesn't mean you need to be stuck in the past. I truly am disappointed in you as a human being.

In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have expressed my personal feelings about a controversial subject.I respect everyone's right to a personal opinion. Every person who disagrees with your opinion is not necessarily hateful.
