1923: THE TRENTON PUBLIC REST ROOMS

Breathes there an old time Trentonian over the age of 70 who doesn't remember that very odorous building known as the Trenton Comfort Station? There were two places in the Trenton area known for a distinctive and quite unpleasant aroma: The Monkey House at Cadwalader Park, and the Public Comfort Station at E. State and Montgomery Streets.

Yes, I DO remember the comfort station. When my parents and I went uptown on Thursday nights to do some shopping, we usually passed it. I honestly don't remember using it, it smelled too nasty. It seems to me there was a bus stop across the street, right on Montgomery and E. State Street. Now there's a "blast from the past"!

My wife's grandpa worked at the Cadwalader Park comfort station. Marie was just talking about "Grandpa would bring home those little squares of toilet paper, that was like sandpaper". Her Grandma would give him a hard time about it.
