1983: DUNHAM'S: WE MISS YOU, OLD FRIEND

Somewhere on the web, I recall someone somewhere linked to this website as "Tom Glover's History Fragments," or some similar phrase, utilizing the word "fragments." I guess that pretty much describes a scrapbook. As a matter of fact, the above article I wrote, and the preceding article are fragments from 2 columns I wrote back in 1983. With all the positive things that have been happening recently along So. Warren Street, and the re-opening of E. State Street in Downtown Trenton, perhaps there is a glimmer of hope for the future. No one can say the town movers and shakers aren't doing their very best to lift that once proud city. I recall how the bad news of Dunham's pulling out of center city Trenton and their ultimate closing of their suburban stores was received by those of us who envisioned an urban turnaround. Alas, it didn't happen; perhaps there is a positive glimmer of light on the horizon with the new administration in Washington promising infrastructure funds along with financial aid to needy urban towns such as Trenton. Let us pray.

As a person who loves local history
this sight is priceless:)

How well I, too, remember all the great Trenton Dept. Stores of the 50s and 60s! We would go to town every Thurs. night and Sat. whether we needed to or not! I had an uncle that lived on Mercer St. and my dad would stay there while my mom, my uncle and I would walk everywhere all over downtown Trenton. Other times, Mom would ride the bus from Lakeside (25 cents, as I recall) and pay all her bills in cash - NJ Bell, Trenton Water Works in City Hall, Public Service, etc in person. We esp loved to shop in Litts, Goldbergs and Dunhams. Lakeside Girl
