THIS IS A PHOTO TAKEN IN FRONT OF MY 119 HARTLEY AVENUE HOME WAY BACK IN 1938 WHEN I WAS A LAD OF 5. I AM HOLDING "SNIFFY" MY FOX TERRIOR WHO WAS THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. NEWKIRK AVENUE AND THE KUSER FARM PROPERTY ARE IN THE BACKGROUND. TODAY, THE GRASSY WALKWAY ON WHICH I AM STANDING IS PAVED AND LANDSCAPED. THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN BY ONE OF OUR MORE AFFLUENT NEIGHBORS, WHEN HAMILTON TRULY EARNED THE NAME "RURAL." NEARLY EVERY HOME HAD A VEGETABLE GARDEN AND ONE OR MORE CHICKEN COOPS, AND AN OCCASIONAL OUTDOOR PRIVY. DON'T MISS THE HAND ME DOWN SHOES I AM WEARING; IN FACT, I SUSPECT ALL THE STUFF I AM WEARING ON THAT SEPTEMBER DAY 70 YEARS AGO WERE "HAND ME DOWNS" FROM MY BROTHER BUD WHO PROBABLY GOT THEM FROM OLDER BROTHER LEN. MY LITTLE BROTHER DONNY WOULD BE BORN THE FOLLOWING YEAR, AND I WOULD BET THAT THOSE DUDS ENDED UP ON HIM, TOO! THE GLOVERS WERE STILL DIGGING OUT OF THE CHAOS CAUSED BY "THE GREAT DEPRESSION."
