MY NEWSPAPER COLLECTION

YOU ARE LOOKING AT MY COLLECTION TRENTON NEWSPAPERS. THE PHOTO SHOWS ONLY A VERY FEW OF THE COLLECTION DATING FROM 1869 AND UP TO THE 1940'S. THESE PAPERS WERE DESTINED FOR THE RECYCLE BIN BACK IN THE EARLY 1980'S WHEN I RESCUED THEM FROM THE RECYCLE BIN. THEY WERE STORED IN MY GARAGE FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS WHEN JACK RAFFERTY, JOE BELINA AND MO ROSSII AGREED THAT HAMILTON'S LOCAL HISTORY EFFORT WAS SEVERELY LACKING, AND AGREED TO HIRE ME AS AN ARCHIVIST ON HAMILTON LOCAL HISTORY. DUE TO THE SPACE TAKEN UP BY THESE HUGE VOLUMES, LIBRARIES ALL OVER AMERICA WERE PURCHASING MICROFILM COPIES AND SENDING THE ORIGINALS TO THE RECYCLING CENTER. LITTLE DID THEY KNOW THAT SOME 20 YEARS LATER, THESE ORIGINAL NEWSPAPERS WOULD BE AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE FOR DIGITIZING LOCAL HISTORY. CONVERSELY, THE REPLACEMENT MICROFILM COPIES ARE OFTEN SCRATCHED AND STREAKED, RESULTING IN VERY POOR REPRODUCTIONS OF THE ORIGINAL.
