1893: SOUTH TRENTON'S EXTON CRACKER CO.

When I was a boy, it was a real treat to open up that familiar paper bag with "OTC" oyster crackers from the Adam Exton cracker bakery on Centre Street in Trenton. They were know far and wide and a Trenton institution up until the middle of the 20th century. I believe they moved out of Trenton and into Lambertville.

The present owner of the OTC brand (Speciality Brands of America) seems to suggest that from 1887 to 1962 the crackers you fondly remember were not made by the inventor's company, Adam Exton & Co, but by an upstart rival that eventually bought out its competitor.

The OTC Company is incorrect. Adam Exton invented the Oyster Cracker, after which his recipe was stolen.

OTC = "ORIGINAL TRENTON CRACKER."
