This is a very interesting photo, and as is the norm with R.C. Maxwell photos, quite clear and detailed. It is almost impossible for me to equate this intersection of E. State Street and Chambers with the same intersection which today is dominated by Father Brian McCormick's "Martinhouse" buildings. I have inserted the 1939 ad for Charles Coleman's Drug store which I never knew was on that corner. I remember Long's being located on E. State and Olden and also on Hamilton and South Olden. Fascinating photo! Once again, crediting to R.C. Maxwell collection at Duke University Archives.
THAT WOULD BE BY THE SIGN ON THE RIGHT, RALPH. THAT HILL WAS A PROBLEM DURING ICY AND SNOWY WEATHER.
