1896: Trenton Police and Fire Alarms

The city of Trenton went "Hi-Tech" with a
state of the art system-alert procurement
for police and fire.

1896: Trenton Police Underpaid

As you can see by these eye opening articles, the Trenton Police Department didn't pay the men in blue very well, especially when compared to other departments in the state. The boys decided to petition the powers that be to bring Trenton, New Jersey into the 20th century with a living wage.

1880: St. Mary's Cathedral

The St. Mary's Cathedral Folder in the Hamilton Local History Collection has some FASCINATING articles dealing with the building of the original St. Mary's Cathedral. Did you know that there was a HIGH HIGH steeple on the original cathedral, and in that HIGH HIGH steeple were huge bells? Each bell was named for a Saint. Future posts will be forthcoming. The two articles accompanying this post deals with the HUGE clock being installed on the cathedral spire. Really fascinating reading.

1892: Downtown Trenton Streets

In my "Streets, Roads, Highways" folder at the library, fascinating articles such as this are filed in order to get an idea of what the city of Trenton was like in years past.

1892: St. Mary's School

One of the fascinating aspects of historical research is finding articles such as this one. Convery, Dwyer and many other old family names are in the listing of those students who attended St. Mary's Grammar School back in the latter part of the 19th century. I would guess that the names would be of interest to anyone whose relatives attended St. Mary's during those years.

1892: Work Held Up on the Battle Monument

As you can see by the article with this post. The unions were alive and well back in 1892. It seems that the stone needed for construction on Trenton's Battle Monument was being held on a ship until the settlement of a union strike.

Preparing for Memorial Day, 1892

When this article was written in 1892, the ranks of still-living veterans of the Civil War began to thin out. We in America have always honored our veterans in gratitude for their sacrifices.

In this year of 2006, the ranks of "The Greatest Generation" is rapidly thinning out. So too will the ranks of our brave men and women who served in the Korean War, and the Vietnam War begin to thin out.

Speaking of "The Greatest Generation," once again this year, R.W. Johnson Hospital of Hamilton will be hosting the WWII veterans with a "WWII Canteen." The affair will be held on Sunday, June 4th at their Quaker Bridge Road facility. For the fifth straight year, it will be my privilege to be a small part of the celebration, bringing an interlude of the music of the WWII era to these brave men and women. Watch for the press releases.

The sacrament of First Communion is a very important event to those of us in the Roman Catholic faith. The ceremony is the same today as it was back in 1892.

The Barnum and Bailey Circus comes to the area, featuring "The Greatest Show on Earth." This is actually two scans. The left is the broadside as published in the True American, and the article on the right has some interesting impressions as stated by members of the area who attended the spectacle.

1902: The New Christ P. E. Church

This is the church my family attended early in the 20th century. It was "High Episcopal," just a lateral move from Roman Catholic. My mother and father were married here in 1923. The church emulates a typical old English church. Unfortunately, financial and political problems resulted in the closing of this great old Trenton Protestant Episcopal church.

1885: Ingersoll Watch Company?

Notice that there is no mention of the company which was relocating to Trenton back there in 1885. The fact that the newcomer was to manufacture "cheap" watches, leads me to believe that this is the beginnings of the old Ingersoll Watch Company, once located in the Monmouth-Tyler area of Trenton.

Hamilton Hornets: Have you been to HHS51.com?

I have begun posting on another local interest website relating to Hamilton High School ("West"), which just happens to be the best High School in the whole United States of America. My class of 1951 will be well represented, but there are entries from the 80's and other material from the files in my collection. You can view it by going to www.hhs51.blogspot.com. My inspiration for this site was the beautiful site created by members of Hamilton' class of 1950. They have a great site at www.hhs50.com. Check it out. Please understand that this site is a work in progress. I will be starting a web site for Kuser School, which just happens to be the best grammar school in the whole United States of America! These files are part of my personal collection and are now in the Local History Collection of the Hamilton Township Public Library.

Were we ever this young? Here we are, still side by side after 52 years of wedded bliss. Both of us were years 1-2-3 and 4 in Louise Baird's choir, and indeed, that's where we met. You will note that we were only in the operetta "2-3 &4" because we were freshmen at Kuser Annex. My aspiration for a career in printing was never met. Back then one had to serve an apprenticeship with very minimal pay. Judy did acheive a secretary position with the Childrens' Home Society of New Jersey for a few years, but when we began our family, we both felt that children need a Mom to come home to. As a result, she ditched her secretarial aspirations and assumed the most difficult career of all: Homemaker!

1950: The Hurricane Strikes Kuser Farm

Back in November, 1950, a massive hurricane decimated the Central Jersey area. Our power was out for nearly two weeks. The photo accompanying this post was taken by Fritz Kuser after the storm had passed. Don Slabicki and I were on the scene when this, and numerous other photos were taken of the incredible destruction of the many trees at Kuser Farm. Looking back, I recall how the cleanup was done. Emanual Laurent was visiting the Kusers at the time. "Manual," as he was known to us, was an Abenaki Indian and close friend of the Kusers, Along with "Manual," Don Slabicki and I spent hours of back-breaking labor sawing the trees into 18 inch logs for the Kuser fireplace. The saw? A two man crosscut. The chain saw was an unknown quantity at the time and not in the vast Kuser farm tool collection. By the time we finished some 4 weeks or so later, we had filled two Kuser garages up to the rafters with 18 inch logs.
