1939: Swimming at the Stadium Playground
Here's a 67 year old press photo showing the kids in the Calhoun and Reservoir Street area enjoying the swimming pool at the Stadium Playground. There are numerous references to that playground in the files at the Hamilton Local History Collection.

1940: Captain Bilbee, Noted Civil Ware Figure
Captain Bilbee has been one of the most prominent of Trenton's Civil War veterans insofar as press releases as I page through the thousands of Trenton newspapers. Bilbee was one of the most active representatives of the local GAR (Grand Army of the Republic).

1939: Flooding in Chambersburg
Local residents usually equate flooding in the Trenton area with the Riverside Avenue area, and other areas along the Delaware and the Assanpink area. Here's the results of a monstrous storm that passed over the area back in July, 1939.
1888: The Fair at Sacred Heart Parish
In the 1800's and early 1900's, the parishioners at Sacred Heart parish on South Broad and Centre streets in Trenton relied on an annual Fair as a fund raiser. According to the numerous clippings in the Hamilton Library's Local History Collection, these events were very popular and well attended.
1888: What's Doing in Chambersburg
Here are a few interesting social notes from the Chambersburg of 1886. Few people realize that "the Burg" was originally populated by English and German immigrants. It wasn't until a decade of so later that Italian immigrants began coming to the area.

1988: 50th Anniversary of St. Anthony Grammar School
St. Anthony Grammar School's class of 1938 featured the music of the late Benny Snyder whose big band orchestra was a local favorite for many years. The Hamilton Library's Local History Collection has a number of "Blue and Gold" newspapers from Cathedral High School. The movie star pretty Rita Culliton

It's not just because he is a fellow Hornet from Hamilton High.....Gil Lugossy has always been one of my favorite citizens, and politicians. Gil has been an outstanding Hamiltonian over these many years, and I hope he will continue for many years to come. Here he celebrated a birthday combined with a fundraiser. Happy Birthday 18 years later, Gil!
Twenty Five Years?
It's very hard to believe that I have been writing for the local community for 25 years. It seems like such a short time ago that I was turning out 'The Way We Were" for the now defunct "Mercer Messenger." I just uncovered this article which was in one of the Messengers Jack Lacy delivered to my office a day or two ago. Twenty five years.....wow, tempus does indeed fugit!

1988: The Greatest Generation
I have devoted many hours to writing and bringing the music of WWII to the members of the "Greatest Generation." These guys and gals are now in their 80's and we are losing them at an alarming rate. Here, Mr. Frank Seaman poses for a photo with members of the "American Ex-Prisoners of War." Seaman was a veteran of World War One and World War Two.

1986 Steinert Honors
In an effort to bring Steinert and Nottingham High School material as well as Hamilton West, I have found a source in the late, lamented Mercer Messenger. Jack Lacy, former Publisher of that great old paper has brought me a huge file of papers from when he held forth as publisher. His papers, along with mine, and those that remain in the Library files, will assure interesting future posts oa all the Grammar and High Schools in Hamilton. Here's a photo of those who were honored by the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, held at the Italian American Sportsmens' Club.
