1986 Colonial's New Pumper

This is the fire company of my childhood, and it will always hold a special place in my memories of growing up in the Colonial district. Msgr. McCorristin was a dear friend, and the Chief, listed here as Franklin Peterson, is really the same "Mop" Peterson of my youth. Mop, if you're reading this, I hope to hear from you one day.

1986 Hamilton Hospital Critical Care Event

They say Greatness is Humble. If you look up the word in the dictionary, you will probably see a photo of Maury Perilli. Maury has been a lynchpin in the Mercer County community for well over 50 years. His accomplishments and contributions to the commuity are incalculable, but he just keeps going humbly and quietly along life's path, never asking for recognition, and unfortunately, seldom receiving the recognition he deserves.

HHS Class of '55 Thirty First Reunion

Here are the movers and shakers behind the reunion planning for the Hornets class of '55. Thanks to Jack Lacy for a nice collection of Mercer Messengers to add to my collection to add to the library's collection. Jack Lacy was the publisher of the Messenger back in the 80's when I was writing "The Way We Were" and my friend Wayne Davis was editing my articles. 1927: Amateur Radio in Wartime

1927: Joe's Tire Store

I wish I could have seen the Battle Monument area of Trenton back in the days when there were countless commerical entities on all sides of the "five points" area. Old photos of the area reveal a quaint and very attractive area of Trenton.

1914 Society News South Trenton

Each Sunday morning for the past 5 years or so, I visit the South Village on Lalor Street, and another site on Stokeley Avenue to bring communion to the residents of those two housing units. My journey from Sacred Heart Church on South Broad Street takes me the length of Centre Street all the way to Lalor. As I journey down that historic area of Trenton, I pass by the historic First Baptist Church, the now abandoned factory of the former Exton Cracker Company, the old Centre Theater which is now a pharmacy, the Wesley Methodist Church, Mott School, and other historic sites on that grand old avenue. This clipping tells of some of the social "doings" in that area before the advent of abandoned and boarded up homes.

1914: Trenton's "Hand-In-Hand" Fire Company

Few cities in America have the rich tradition of fire
fighting than our historic city of Trenton. The Union Volunteer Fire Company, despite claims to the contrary from a New England Fire company, was the oldest fire company in America. The photo accompanying this post is a "Times" photo which is remarkably clear considering the antiquity of the page from which it was scanned.

1914: Father Walter T. Leahy

Father Leahy, as you will read in this antiquated clip, in addition to being a man of the cloth was also an accomplished writer and historian. His "History of the Diocese of Trenton" occupies a treasured space on my bookshelf.

1914: Site for the new Trenton High School

Even as there was a fully operational and beautiful Victorian
Trenton High School on Chestnut and Hamilton Avenue, the town fathers were looking for a site for the new Trenton High School.

1927: Charles Private Hospital

Hey, I need some help here. Is this the old "Trenton General Hospital?" Didn't it morph into today's R.W. Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton?

SKATELAND WAS LOCATED IN THE OLD TROLLEY GARAGE ON LALOR STREET. "Skateland" later became "Capitol" Roller Rink.

1926: Trenton High's Bobashela

Among the recent Hamilton Local History acquisitions is a number of yearbooks. This one is from Trenton High School when it was located on Hamilton and Chestnut Avenues. There were minor scuffs and chips on the cover, but they have been touched up for this graphic.

Circa 1900 New Jersey State Fair

The "Interstate Fair" was established in 1888. This post card view is a very early photo of the grandstand area as it appeared in the early part of the 20th century.

The McElmoyl Canvas Duck Bags

The McElmoyl name is very familiar to old line resident natives of the village of Groveville. This absolutely rare and fascinating scan of the McElmoyl line of canvas duck coal and kindling wood bags is legitimately categorized as "extremely rare." In all my years of historical research, I have never heard of this facet of Groveville's industrial past.

RARE PHOTO OF MERCER RUBBER CO.

This fascinating photo is from an undated postal card. In the lower right, " Rubber Mill, Hamilton Square, NJ" was overprinted in white type. I removed it with my graphics program to preserve the essence of the photo. I am assuming that this is the Mercer Rubber Company. In a word:
FASCINATING! I would guess the date of this photo to be around 1910. Any viewer with information on this exquisite photo?

This is a high definition scan of the directory of the Mercerville Methodist Episcopal Church, 1929. I will be scanning some of the pages for any viewer who may be interested in the genealogical aspect of this interesting directory. There are many familiar old names in this little booklet.

All right guys, admit you would love to have had one of these in the school yard when you were a boy! Today, an "OSHA" type organization would order the removal of this daring fun swing.

1956: Steinert Junior High School Faculty

Here's another photo from Kathy Csorgo Annaccurato, this one of the faculty at Steinert Junior High School in the very early years. Was this not ultimately to become the home of today's Nottingham "North Stars" Nottingham High School? I was over in Europe in Uncle Sam's Army when all these changes took place, so help me out here!

1946: Bromley's Troop 3 Boy Scouts

This an a faded photo, but I see HHS '51 classmates Kieth Kauffman, Brian Ruch, John "Suds" Sutherland, and Richard Cope, along with many other non classmates, all of whom are familiar to me. There's little Bill Collins, Bobby Colton, I think from the class 49 or50....not sure, and of course, there's Webb Grimm, a dear friend I see in my many visits to Hamiltoneven today. Anys "Happy Hearts." Anybody in there you know?

Class of 1942 - CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL

I'm sorry to say I don't have the rest of the class at the present moment. They are on another page, and the source from whence this photo came is in complete dis-array. I don't know whether I have it or not, but I'm lookin'. This is a huge file, and had to be reduced substantially. I can make out the names with my monitor, but it will be difficult if you don't have LCD.

1932: CATHEDRAL CLASS PHOTO

This is an experimental full page digital photo from the Trenton Sunday Times Advertiser. As you may know, unless one has a "tabloid" scanner, a full page is somewhat difficult to duplicate. However, with the "macro" possibilities of today's digital cameras, it is possible to produce a legible graphic. This photo was taken with my Samsung A5000 with 5.0 megapixels. Future posts will be made with enhanced features, eliminating the shadows, and the hastily taped up original, and other obvious defects in the graphic.

Bob was a familiar figure to those Hornets who attended Hamilton back in the latter part of the 1940's. He was an excellent pianist and played in the High School band. The last time I saw Bob he was playing the keyboard in Dick Chime's wonderful Polka Band. Incidentally, Dick is my classmate from HHS '51.
