Ca. 1915 Groveville Methodist Church

Thanks again to Groveville's Gary Lippincott for this beautiful engraving of the Groveville Methodist church. Gary added this interesting comment:

THIS IS THE GROVEVILLE METHODIST CHURCH WITH THE ORIGINAL STEEPLE AND BEFORE CHURCH STREET WAS LOWERED TO DECREASE THE GRADE OF THE STREET.

Thanks, Gary, I didn't know the street was lowered, and I would bet that many other viewers didn't know it, either.

Yardville and Groveville

I found this article to be a completely charming view of the two twin towns of Groveville and Yardville as told by a visitor some 108 years ago. This article was written during the time of the one room country school.

Yardville Hotel

Here's an interesting view of the old and very historic Yardville Hotel, still standing after all these years. the text below is extracted from a column I wrote many years ago, giving just the essence of life as it was in that quaint area of Hamilton Township.

2006: At the Annual Hamilton "Fall Harvest Festival"

Here are my friends from Hamilton's Cultural Heritage Commission. They are sponsoring a ghost story telling night at Kuser Mansion. Details can be found at www.hamiltonnj.com.

1914: Princeton Has a New Chemical Engine!

An excellent example of early 20th century fire fighting is pictued in this 1914 photo of Princeton's newest fire fighting acquisition. Another post in the archives section of my website is a group photo of the fire "laddies*" of Princeton's Mercer Fire Co.

*The contemporary 19th and early 20th century press often referred to firemen as "laddies."

1897: Central Baptist Church

Central Baptist was smack dab in the center of the city of Trenton for years and years before moving to the present location on Pennington Road in Ewing. Reverend Wishart was also one of the more prominent Baptist ministers during that era.

1897: Trenton Fire and Police Report

From the "FIRE RELATED" and "POLICE-TRENTON" folders in the Hamilton Local History Collection, an interesting article on the state of the Trenton Fire Department and the Police Department as it was in mid June, 1897.

1951: Mr. and Mrs.Robert Beckett

Here's a photo from our 55th reunion at the Mercer County Park's Boathouse which was held in late September, 2006. Bob Beckett and his lovely wife Pat Stoy Beckett were on hand and it was great to relive the good old days.
NOTE TO MY CLASSMATES: I regret to say that nearly every photo I took at our reunion came out blurry and I was completely shocked to see that I had set the camera dial incorrectly! Let me explain: The room was quite dark. The dial selector on my digital camera is the size of a dime. The print on that dial is just a bit larger than a mustard seed. Bottom line: WRONG CAMERA SETTING! So sorry. If any of my classmates who took photos of our reunion are viewing this, would you be willing to share them? Please send 'em to thomglo@verizon.net.

1937; Pennington Central High School Archers

These winsome lasses from Pennington High s, hool are aiming right at the Times' photog. Archery was a popular high school sport back in the 30's, 40's and 50's.

1939: Cooper Street School

Years ago, long before the advent of all those glass encrusted high rise office buildings in the Market, Cooper and Lamberton Street area, there was a viable community of Jewish residents living happily in that neighborhood. Union Street, no longer in the neighborhood, along with Cooper and Market streets, were alive with consumer markets back in the mid 20th century.

1936 Trenton High School Dedication

This article details the dedication ceremony surrounding the Trenton High Athletic field. Trenton High is located on the land once owned by Abner Chambers. The field was a WPA project during the great depression.

1936: Junior 3 School - Trenton

Here's a photo of the school safety patrol. I assume the Trenton schools had an affiliation with the Keystone Automobile Club.

1937: Ternstedt Division of General Motors

One of the very sad events to hit the Trenton area was the demise of
the Tenstedt Divison of General Motors Corp. During World War II, the Ewing plant shown in the photo, along with another Eastern Aircraft plant in Linden, New Jersey, turned out the Grumman "Avenger;" Many historians consider the airplane to be one of the major factors in our victory in the Pacific during World War II.

1914: City of Trenton Playgrounds

There is a limit to the size of a photo which will fit within the limits of a computer scanner. This photo was taken with my digital camera, set at the "macro" (closeup) setting. Not only is it a faster process, the graphic loses little of its legibility.

1914: Riverside Avenue Real Estate

When I saw this real estate ad from the Atterbury Tract Realty company, I wondered if the 1914 buyers of those beautiful homes knew of the floods which would plague the area so many times in the future.

1914: Free Home Sites in Pennington!

N Even as there were "homesteaders" in Oklahoma, so too was there a rush to grab the free building lots on the Howe tract in Pennington.

1927: Trenton's WOAX Radio Station

Trenton's first broadcast radio station was the source of mixed emotions. Many letter writers to the local newspapers chastised the station for their very boring programming. On the other hand there were numerous defenders of the radio station, and loyally tuned in every night to hear their favorite programs.

1931: "AIR YACHTS" at Ewing's Mercer Airport

What a dinosaur! The amphibian airplane which "docked" at Mercer Airport made headlines in the local press. What an incredible picture of a very austere Mercer County Airport!

1944? WTTM

Remember Tom and Billie Durand? Remember that great radio station that once called Trenton, New Jersey its home town? Well, it's left the city and moved to another town, and taken it's easy listening programming with it. Here's a photo from the library's "RADIO" photo showing the first anniversary party, believed ot be held in the Hotel Stacy Trent or the Hildebrecht.
