1885: Ingersoll Watch Company?

Notice that there is no mention of the company which was relocating to Trenton back there in 1885. The fact that the newcomer was to manufacture "cheap" watches, leads me to believe that this is the beginnings of the old Ingersoll Watch Company, once located in the Monmouth-Tyler area of Trenton.

Hamilton Hornets: Have you been to HHS51.com?

I have begun posting on another local interest website relating to Hamilton High School ("West"), which just happens to be the best High School in the whole United States of America. My class of 1951 will be well represented, but there are entries from the 80's and other material from the files in my collection. You can view it by going to www.hhs51.blogspot.com. My inspiration for this site was the beautiful site created by members of Hamilton' class of 1950. They have a great site at www.hhs50.com. Check it out. Please understand that this site is a work in progress. I will be starting a web site for Kuser School, which just happens to be the best grammar school in the whole United States of America! These files are part of my personal collection and are now in the Local History Collection of the Hamilton Township Public Library.

1951: Still side by side after all these years!

Were we ever this young? Here we are, still side by side after 52 years of wedded bliss. Both of us were years 1-2-3 and 4 in Louise Baird's choir, and indeed, that's where we met. You will note that we were only in the operetta "2-3 &4" because we were freshmen at Kuser Annex. My aspiration for a career in printing was never met. Back then one had to serve an apprenticeship with very minimal pay. Judy did acheive a secretary position with the Childrens' Home Society of New Jersey for a few years, but when we began our family, we both felt that children need a Mom to come home to. As a result, she ditched her secretarial aspirations and assumed the most difficult career of all: Homemaker!

HHS '51: 50th Reunion, 2001

This photo was taken with my little Canon 35 mm point and shoot. Unfortunately, the digital camera was not withing my financial reach back in 2001. Now I'm ready for the 55th with a 5.1 megapixel
Samsung, so look out! YOU WILL ALSO NOTE THAT THE LADIES FROM THE CLASS OF '51 ARE STILL LISTED USING THEIR MAIDEN NAMES. I PREFER IT THAT WAY; CALL IT JOURNALISTIC "LICENSE!"

1950: The Hurricane Strikes Kuser Farm

Back in November, 1950, a massive hurricane decimated the Central Jersey area. Our power was out for nearly two weeks. The photo accompanying this post was taken by Fritz Kuser after the storm had passed. Don Slabicki and I were on the scene when this, and numerous other photos were taken of the incredible destruction of the many trees at Kuser Farm. Looking back, I recall how the cleanup was done. Emanual Laurent was visiting the Kusers at the time. "Manual," as he was known to us, was an Abenaki Indian and close friend of the Kusers, Along with "Manual," Don Slabicki and I spent hours of back-breaking labor sawing the trees into 18 inch logs for the Kuser fireplace. The saw? A two man crosscut. The chain saw was an unknown quantity at the time and not in the vast Kuser farm tool collection. By the time we finished some 4 weeks or so later, we had filled two Kuser garages up to the rafters with 18 inch logs.

1986: Max Jordan: Another HHS Legend

During my happy years as a columnist for the MERCER MESSENGER, I was afforded the privilege of filling "Page 6" and also a spread under the byline, "Hamilton Scrapbook." One of my scrapbook pages was devoted to Mr. Max Jordan, a teacher quite familiar to those of us who attended HHS in mid 20th century.

Easter, 2006: Sacred Heart Church Altar

I took this exquisite photo of the altar at Sacred Heart Church. As indicated in earlier posts, Sacred Heart and its predecessor, St. John's is the oldest parish in New Jersey.

1986: The Lenhardt's: A Fire Fighting Family

This feature from Jack Lacy's late, lamented "Mercer Messenger." I details the story of each of the family whose fire fighting careers are legendary. I knew Ray, Joe and Jack from my years at Kuser Farm. They were farm tractor jockeys from early childhood. Clement, Barbara, and Francis Lenhardt were also dear friends of mine back in the 1940's when I met them at Kuser Farm.

1987: Eddie Forsthoffer

Eddie and I renewed an old friendship when he visited the library a few years before his untimely passing. Ed was very interested in my writings, and even suggested a few subjects to write about. As I recall, Ed was a year or so ahead of me at HHS. I believe he was a member of the class of 1950, but I am not quite sure.

1986: Steinert Seniors Dance

1986: Jack Lacy Remembers Les Robbins

As you can see by Jack's eulogy to the late Lester Robbins, Hamilton did indeed lose a local "giant" whose accomplishments are legendary. The Robbins family has very historic roots in this area of New Jersey, and specifically Hamilton Square.

1945: My Dad the Committee-man

Like many of my generation, my father was a die hard follower of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt was Pop's hero right up to the time of his death in 1984, he always spoke admiringly of President Roosevelt. As you can see, he was also in to local politics, as a County Democratic Committeman back in 1945. During that era Hamilton had the Committee form of government.

1911: Some things never change!

It isn't quite true that "some things never change." That guy buying a gun back in 1911 would not have the privilege of "plea bargaining;" that farsical loophole that is just one of the cogs in our overly lenient, but very familiar 21st century revolving door of justice. He would have been sent to jail....a jail with no television, or workout room. Additionally, he received a sentence of 10 years, he would be in prison for ten years.

1903: Persecution of the Jews

From the beginning of recorded time, the Jewish people have been persecuted. We often hear of the horror of the Nazi Holocaust, but there have been countless other horrors visited upon the Jews in locations all over the world. The column accompanying this post tells of the fears our local citizens of Jewish descent felt for their loved ones who were subject to still another round of persecution in Russia. I don't understand how one group of humans can treat others with such beastiality.
