2006: FROM MY FRIEND W2AEI-PAUL WOOLVERTON

Too Busy for a FRIEND?

I RECEIVE MANY emails with some very touching sentiments. However, this one rose to the top of the pile! It touched me to the extent that I am going to post it on all of my websites. It certainly is food for thought and soul-searching. Indeed, at mid-point in the text, I had to reach for a Kleenex as my vision became blurred. Thanks, Paul, and thanks to "Lois R," whom I assume was the originator of this heart warming message.

One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name.

Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down.

It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers.

That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual.

On Monday she gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered. "I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" and, "I didn't know others liked me so much," were most of the comments.

No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on.

Several years later, one of the students was killed in Viet Nam and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. He looked so handsome, so mature.

The church was packed with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin.

As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. "Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. She nodded: "yes." Then he said: "Mark talked about you a lot."

After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a luncheon. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher.

"We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it."

Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him.

"Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it."

All of Mark's former classmates started to gather around. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list. It's in the top drawer of my desk at home."

Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album."

"I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary"

Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. "I carry this with me at all times," Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: "I think we all saved our lists"

That's when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again.

The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don't know when that one day will be.

So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late.

And One Way To Accomplish This Is: Forward this message on. If you do not send it, you will have, once again passed up the wonderful opportunity to do something nice and beautiful.

If you've received this, it is because someone cares for you and it means there is probably at least someone for whom you care.

If you're "too busy" to take those few minutes right now to forward this message on, would this be the VERY first time you didn't do that little thing that would make a difference in your relationships?

The more people that you send this to, the better you'll be at reaching out to those you care about.

Remember, you reap what you sow. What you put into the lives of others comes back into your own.

May Your Day Be Blessed As Special As You Are

1960: Ladies and Gentlemen, Kathy Csorgo HHS '60!

Isn't she lovely? Thanks to Kathy, we have a treasure trove of early 1960's grammar and high school memorabilia. Kathy has carefully preserved many wonderful mementos from her years at Steinert Grammar School, and from her class of 1960 at HHS. As time permits, I will be digitizing many of the items in Kathy's collection including the 1960 presentation of Carousel, wherein Billy Bigelow as portrayed so ably by George Bolge, while the ever lovely Kay Salvatore provided the role of Julie Jordan. How well I remember my Aunt Louise Baird raving about the unusual musical talent of that class! Stay tuned, and many, many thanks, Kathy, you are a tribute to the Hornet bee hive!

1960 HHS SENIOR BALL

To an emotional senior citizen like me, the quaint "dance book" that the girls in my generation took to the dance evokes memories of a custom which unfortunately has passed into extinction. Back in those innocent years, we didn't have to have a police presence in school, and our dances and sporting events went on without the fights, drugs, and other societal cancer which caused many schools to do away with programs which taught us the social graces. How sad! Thanks Kathy, for this treasure from the past. It will join an HHS '42 dance book which is in the library's HHS Folder.

HHS '60: Ladies and Gentlemen, Kathy Csorgo!

A grateful "thank you" to Kathy Csorgo Annaccarato for preserving her collection of school memorabilia. Kathy was 9 years behind me in the class of 1960, but that familiar old school spirit was alive and well! Here's a photo of lovely Kathy from the 1960 "RETROSPECT." Note the dance book pages, wherein Kathy recalls her escort for that grand affair which we all recall as the Senior Ball. Note also the restaurant where they went. DON YOUNG'S! You have silver locks if you remember that old North Olden Avenue veddy exclusive restaurant.

1956 Steinert Grammar School

I have just begun digitizing some of the incredible school memorabilia from my new-sound friend, Kathy Csorgo Annaccarato. Kathy is a gal after my own heart! She has saved those very precious memories of our school years for posterity, and indeed, they will be available to future generations, thanks to Kathy's foresight, and the Local History Collection at the Hamilton Township Public Library. More of Kathy's collection can be found on my Hamilton High School website, www.hhs51.blogspot.com. Don't miss the incredible dance booklet that Kathy saved, recalling her Senior ball with another "Tom!"

1987: A "STATE OF THE ART" COMPUTER!

Wow! Look at the features on this 1987 "KAYPRO" computer! As I age...no, no....as WE age, I can't help but experience an extreme fascination for how fast our high tech age is progressing. I remember back in the 1980's when I graduated from a "Brother" electronic typewriter, which I thought was "state of the art," to an Epson laptop computer I purchased from my buddy, Wayne Davis, at that time the Editor of the late, lamented "Mercer Messenger." It had an LCD screen with 10 lines max! That old Epson ran on an outdated operating system known as "CPM." There was not "floppy" disk, rather a mini tape cassette stored the intelligence! Then I went to what I thought was surely the ultimate computer. A little laptop with a floppy drive which allowed it to store 720 KB of intelligence! Wow! While I was writing for the "Messenger,"
I recall lusting for that KAYPRO which was on a full page in the Messenger.

1987: CHRISTMASTIME AT KUSER FARM

SURE IT'S "OUT OF SEASON," BUT IT STILL MAKES FOR INTERESTING VIEWING. THIS PHOTO IS FROM A COLUMN I DID BACK IN 1987, AND IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY YOU WILL SEE MANY FOLKS FROM HAMILTON'S ILLUSTRIOUS PAST.

1987: THE VILLA PARK ANNUAL REUNION

BACK IN THE 1980'S WHEN I WAS WRITING FOR THE LATE, GREAT "MERCER MESSENGER" AND "EWING MESSENGER," I WROTE A COLUMN RECOUNTING THE HISTORY OF THAT WONDERFUL AREA OF TRENTON KNOWN AS "VILLA PARK." THAT COLUMN SPURRED THE CIVIC ASSOCIATION TO INVITE JUDY AND ME TO THEIR 1987 NEIGHBORHOOD REUNION. IMAGINE OUR SURPRISE WHEN WE FOUND OURSELVES MINGLING WITH OUR DEAR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS BOB AND ROSE MARIE MCLAUGHLIN, FRANK AND FRAN CHRISTIANI, DON AND BERNICE CUNNINGHAM, FRANK DONLON, AND OTHER ATTENDEES WHOSE NAMES ESCAPE ME. THESE FOLKS GREW UP IN A WONDERFUL NEIGHBORHOOD AND IT WAS A TRULY MOVING EXPERIENCE TO SEE HOW CLOSE KNIT A COMMUNITY THEY HAD.

"VILLA PARK TERRACE." I BELEIVE THE AREA SHOWN IN
THE PHOTO IS ALONG LIBERTY STREET.

1905: VILLA PARK - HOMEDELL AREA -"NEW WILBUR"

CHECK OUT THE ENTRY, "NEW WILBUR" ON THIS MAP. VERY INTERESTING. BESIDES THE "BOROUGH OF WILBUR" EAST STATE STREET AND OLDEN AVENUE AREA, EARLY NEWS ACCOUNTS LOCATED WILBUR AS FAR OUT AS GARFIELD, LOGAN, AND DOWN TO THE LIBERTY STREET AREA.

1987: Villa Park Civic Association

VILLA PARK HAS ALWAYS BEEN A VERY INTERESTING AREA OF TRENTON. THE JAMES MOSES SCHOOL, ATLAS WELDING, LOWNEY'S "JUNK" STORE (ONE OF MY FAVORITE STORES) GEORGE GIBERSON'S LITTLE DELI IN THE RITTMAN BUILDING, JACOB RITTMAN'S WATERING HOLE....(DID YOU KNOW THAT RITTMAN WAS CONSIDERING A HOTEL ON THAT CORNER?)
TONY AMATO'S BARBER SHOP ON THE CORNER OF PARK AVENUE AND JERSEY STREET, AND VERY EARLY ON. QUINTIN'S RACE TRACK.

Bob Poksay, HHS '53 AND Joe Poksay, HHS '43

I received the following email from Bob Poksay. The Poksay family grew up in the Cornell Heights area of Hamilton, where I recall my friends the Mesday boys lived. Bob's email serves two purposes. First, it establishes him as a member of the class of '53 at HHS, and second, provides a moving tribute to his brother, Lawrence Joseph Poksay. Lawrence was a member of the "Greatest Generation" who passed away recently. Bob thinks his brother was from HHS '43, and I will see if I can verify that. As you will read in the email Bob sent, Lawrence had a very distinguished career in the U.S. Air Corps during WWII, and then as a pilot of Air Force 2! Thanks very much for the heads up, Bob, and be assured your brother is in our prayers.

BOB'S EMAIL:

Tom:
My name is Bob Poksay, HHS class of '53, formerly living in Cornell Heights. My dad owned the store at the bottom of the hill. I appreciate your work in keeping HHS classmates informed. I am enclosing the obituary of my brother, Lawrence "Butch" Poksay. Like many of his classmates, he left HHS toward the end of his senior year to enter the service. He piloted a B-17 during WW ll and later flew Airforce Two for several Vice Presidents of the USA. Perhaps sometime you will have use for info on one of our departed heroes. I believe he was in the class of '43.

Lawrence Joseph Poksay

Lawrence Joseph Poksay NOVATO, CA - Lawrence Joseph Poksay, most recently of Salem, OR, but also a longtime resident of Novato, CA, passed away Friday. Mr. Poksay was born March 17, 1925 in Trenton, the eldest son of John and Anna Poksay. When he was 17, "Butch" enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. Upon graduation he served in World War II where he was based in Thorpe Abbotts, England with the noted 100th Bombardment Group and copiloted "Kleen Sweep," a B17 bomber (a.k.a. The Flying Fortress). After World War II ended, Mr. Poksay served as a reservist in Fort Dix until he was recalled back into the service during the Korean War, where he served as an instructor pilot at Bolling AFB in Washington, DC at Rhine Main AFB in Frankfurt, Germany for troop carriers, and at Stead AFB in Reno, NV for Strategic Air Command (air rescue operations). Mr. Poksay later joined forces with the 89th Military Air Wing at Bolling AFB; this operation relocated to the newly-constructed Andrews AFB in Washington, DC. It was here that Mr. Poksay served with Special Air Missions (SAM) for Presidential Fleets under the JFK and Johnson administrations. While with SAM, Mr. Poksay served as the pilot for Vice Presidents Johnson and Nixon and U.S. and foreign dignitaries. He was transferred to Wiesbaden AFB in Germany for three years wherein he continued his service with SAM. In June 1966, Mr. Poksay transferred to Hamilton AFB in Novato , where he retired from the USAF as a lieutenant colonel in October 1968. In all, Mr. Poksay very proudly served his country for over 28 years. Besides flying, Mr. Poksay also enjoyed motoring around in sports cars, power boats, and last but not least, huge RVs. Mr. Poksay was preceded in his death by his wife of 49 years, Mary Michalczyn Poksay. He is survived by his daughter Linda Poksay of Santa Barbara, CA; his son Thomas Poksay (Lisa) of Novato, CA; two grandsons, Andrew and Alexander Poksay, also of Novato, CA; and his brother Robert Poksay (Alma) of Sewell. Lawrence is also survived by his companion Ruth Gruzdiz of Salem, OR, formerly of Novato, CA. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Friday with a vigil service at 11 a.m. at Keaton's Redwood Chapel, 1801 Novato Blvd., Novato, CA.
