I have identified the villains in the graphic above that
Dick Tracy encountered during his career as a comic strip detective. Capp Stubbs, Smokey Stover, Prince Valiant, Smilin' Jack, and of course, Dick Tracy! The above was pasted in one of my "Nostalgia" scrapbooks, and also appeared in a "The Way We Were" column which I wrote many years ago for the late, great, Mercer Messenger. A year of so ago, on this website, I started a list of noted eateries, restaurants, hot dog stands and other long forgotten vestiges of our past. I was one of 2 other guys who was interviewed on WBCB (1490 A.M.) and we had a lively discussion remembering those great old eating places.
The list still has additional entries being added.
Let's add to my list of comics from the past. I have given you a few long-lost comics in the intro above. How many do you remember that I aren't listed? Go to the "Comments" section below and add those that you remember. (To get you started: "Henry," "Steve Canyon," c'mon, rake over that gray matter and add to the list! I'm so old I remember Milton Caniff, Russ Westover, and Ham Fisher!
Even though our teachers frowned upon comics and comic books back in our grammar school years, I attribute much of my early education in reading comprehension to the daily and Sunday Trenton Times comics, and the Sunday edition of the New York Journal American which published the "Puck" series of comics. Lyman Young's "Tim Tyler's Luck" and Chester Gould's "Dick Tracy," Milton Caniff's "Terry and the Pirates," Ernie Bushmiller's "Nancy" and countless other comics of the era in which I grew up played a very important part in my early reading comprehension. I loved Tim Tyler and Captain Easy. Both of whom graced the pages of the TrentonTimes. Prince Valiant, a SundayTimes color feature, was one of the catalysts that planted the seed of historic interest in my overly absorbent gray matter. Today's comics are different from the golden age. In the golden age, actual stories were serialized and continued on day by day until completed, and a new story began. I am going to begin a personal collection of those old comics and scan and digitize those of interest to me. We had a huge list of daily comic strips to follow including: WASH TUBBS, TILLIE THE TOILER, DIXIE DUGAN, THE KATZENJAMMER KIDS, L'IL ABNER, FRECKLES, WINNIE WINKLE, BRINGING UP FATHER, MAJOR HOOPLE, ANDY GUMP, and the list goes on. My army years had my buddies and I reading the daily adventures of "Steve Canyon;" one of my very favorite Caniff comics. Ken Pierce Books, an internet site on the web has put together a number of those comics, both color and black and white in book form. I will begin a collection; especially Terry and the Pirates, even though I wish they had saved TIM TYLER'S LUCK AND JOE JINKS AND DYNAMITE DUNN!
