1905: CONTROVERSY AT CADWALADER PLACE

An earlier post within the past few days told of the city's attempt student transfers to the Joseph Wood School on the other side of the city. As can be seen in the above articles, the citizens of Cadwalader Place were vehemently against the proposal and came out in large numbers to protest.

1905: PATRICK BERRY'S "BERRYVILLE" CADWALADER PLACE

From the "Neighborhood Development" folder, comes this fascinating piece of history which has been buried for over a century "The Montgomery Farm." I have heard of "Moses Woods," and other interesting areas which were in various areas of Trenton before the developments began. Here we find that there was a "Montgomery Farm;" the site of today's West End area in the West State Street and Prospect Street area. The shaded area above shows a portion of the homes Berry built back in the early 1900's.
The map is a scan of the area as it was in 1905.

1897: CADWALADER PLACE - ELDORADO

The beautiful area we know of as Cadwalader Place was described in the above real estate ad as "Eldorado." It was and is a "gold mine" community which has managed to maintain its ambiance over the years. The above graphic has been cut and pasted into a single graphic. (The "Trenton's Eldorado" was on a different page from the actual ad.) It was cut and pasted next to the real estate ad.

1936: THE CANAL FEEDER AT CADWALADER PARK

Unfortunately, there are pitifully few 70 and 80 year old seniors who use the computer. If there were, I would bet that many of the "West Enders"in their number would fondly recall taking a cooling dip in the canal at Cadwalader Park.

1913: "The Cadwalader Park Tunnel'

This was a very familiar place for me back in the 1960's when I was deeply involved in metal detecting on the sprawling and beautiful grounds of Cadwalader Park. This photo is from the era when offset photos were very primitive. It took a bit of tweaking with Photoshop and this is the best I could do to bring out the details, even though they are very obscure...(Look closely; that's a horse drawn buggy going toward the tunnel.

1936: EDGEWOOD AVENUE

1891: Patrick J. Berry's "Berryville"

From the "NEIGHBORHOODS AND NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT" folder, this graphic and and the map in the next post relate to "Berryville," a Trenton area neighborhood developed by real estate man, Patrick J. Berry.

1905 BERRYVILLE

This is "Berryville;" an 1891 real estate development established by Mr. Patrick J. Berry, at the time a resident of 494 West State Street. The development was located between Edmund C. Hill's Cadwalader Place and the city of Trenton, in the area West State Street, Prospect Street, and West End Avenue.

1897: E.C. HILL RESIDENCE IN CADWALADER PLACE

EVEN TODAY, CADWALADER PLACE IS A VERY DESIRABLE NEIGHBORHOOD IN WHICH TO LIVE. A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO, I WAS ONE OF THE TOUR GUIDES FOR THE CONTEMPORARY CLUB'S "FOUR VIEWS OF TRENTON." WE VISITED A NUMBER OF THE HOMES IN THAT BEAUTIFUL NEIGHBORHOOD. IF ONLY ALL NEIGHBORHOODS COULD RETAIN THE BUCOLIC AMBIENCE OF CADWALADER PLACE!
