1886: THE IRON INDUSTRY IN SOUTH TRENTON

THE SOUTH TRENTON AREA WAS ONCE KNOWN AS A MAJOR AMERICAN STEEL CENTER. PETER COOPER'S IRON AND STEEL PLANT, JOHN A. ROEBLING'S WIRE AND CABLE MILL, COOPER HEWITT IRON WORKS PHOENIX IRON, AND PROBABLY OTHERS WHICH AT THE PRESENT TIME DON'T COME TO MIND GAVE THE AREA A THRIVING PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT FOR MANY OF THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF THE SOUTH TRENTON AREA IN THE MID TO LATE 19TH CENTURY.

1886: THE IRON INDUSTRY IN TRENTON

THERE ARE COUNTLESS ARTICLES IN THE 19TH CENTURY PRESS RELATING TO THE SOUTH TRENTON STEEL MILLS: PHOENIX IRON WORKS, THE COOPER HEWITT STEEL WORKS, AND NUMEROUS OTHERS RIGHT UP TO THE AMERICAN BRIDGE COMPANY IN THE 1960'S ARE REGULARLY REPORTED.

Trenton was a major player in the iron and steel industry back in the 1800's. The giant New Jersey Steel plant, along the river, and the Phoenix Iron and Steel plant, along with John A. Roebling's manufacturing plant were integral parts of the Trenton industrial scene. Many of our neighborhoods were established in the surrounding area, as hundreds of immigrants migrated to Trenton for the many jobs the mills offered.
