1909: ST. MICHAEL'S P.E. CHURCH

I was "confirmed" in this church way back in my very early childhood. Even though St. James P.E. Church on Greenwood and Logan Avenues was the church my family attended after leaving Christ P.E. Church on Hamilton Avenue and Whittaker Street in Trenton. My conversion to the Roman Catholic faith back in the early 1960's was a very easy, indeed almost a lateral move as the doctrine of the Anglican faith is very close to that of the Roman Catholic faith to which I converted. AS to St. Michael's that grand old historical treasure is a tribute to the remaining parishioners and equally importantly, the church is steeped in Revolutionary War history. It was here that the British commandeered the church for sleeping quarters for the Hessian troops during their occupation of Trenton.

1903 AND 1909: ST. MICHAEL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

I really love those old engravings that were published in the newspaper before the advent of photographs. Above is a pristine scan and enhancement of historic St. Michael's Church on No. Broad Street. We all know the history of that incredibly historic edifice and the part it played in the battle of Trenton. I was baptized and confirmed in this church back in the late 1930's. My father's British roots obviously the main reason. 

1893: ST. MICHAEL'S P.E. CHURCH A CRITICAL PART OF THE BATTLE OF TRENTON

 Just in time for Trenton's annual "Patriots' Day" celebration, here is a graphic of one of the major players in the battle of Trenton. Fortunately, St. Michael's P.E. church has survived the years and stands proudly on North Warren Street in downtown Trenton. LIttle Tommy Glover was confirmed in this church way back in his early youth. The magnificent landmark played a very critical part in the battle of Trenton. This engraving is from an October 1893 newspaper telling of the dedication of the Battle Monument.

1916:HISTORIC COMMUNION VESSEL AT HISTORIC ST. MICHAELS P.E. CHURCH TRENTON

You talk about antiquity! Not only do we have that inredibly historic St. Michael's P.E. church on North Warren Street, but the equally incredible graphic above; a communion vessel which was a gift from the English crown back in the early 1700's. I was confirmed and baptized in that historic old church on North Warren Street way, way back in my childhood.

If there is any redeeming value in this website's humble effort to focus on the fascinating history of the Mercer County area, it lies in illustrating the graphics of little publicized persons, places and things from the past; most of which are hidden deep in the pages of old, fading newspapers or scratchy microfilm. The "Central House" graphic above gives a fascinating look at an historic building which once occupied the site of the St. Michael's P.E. Church graveyard.
