Poverty will always be with us. The above extracts are from the front page of an early and very damaged Trenton Times front page. The Alms House referred to in the article on poverty was on Princeton Avenue in Trenton.

1922: SHARING THANKSGIVING WITH THE LESS FORTUNATE

Poverty will always be with us. Were this photo dated 1934 or 1935, a member of the Glover family might very well have been be seen waiting in that line. I remember my mother taking me to the second floor of the Colonial Fire Company on Liberty Street and Newkirk Avenue, where we picked up our share of dried peaches, dried apples, flour, powdered milk, and other "commodities" as they were called.

1935: THE TRENTON RESCUE MISSION

The poor and impoverished will always be with us. Thankfully there are numerous citizens and organizations who devote their time to the welfore of those less well off. Here's a photo of the Rescue Mission as it was back in 1935. The Mission is still located on Perry and Carroll Street in Trenton

1914: COUNTRY LIFE FOR CITY KIDS

EVEN BACK THEN, THERE WAS A NEED FOR CITY CHILDREN TO EXPERIENCE THE COOL AND BUCOLIC COUNTRY EXPERIENCE. IN THOSE YEARS BEFORE AIR CONDITIONING, THOSE ROW HOMES IN THE CITY MUST HAVE SWELTERED IN HEAT. IN LATER YEARS, THE TRENTON TIMES CONDUCTED A
"FRESH AIR FUND" FOR THOSE UNDERPRIVILEGED YOUTH OF THE CITY OF TRENTON.

1906 HAMILTON'S "POOR FARM"

The "Poor Farm" referred to was located on Route 130 adjacent to Harry's Army-Navy Store.
