1940: THE CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS

The "CCC" provided many young men to get a taste of the military life and be exposed to the discipline required to become a productive citizen. In 1940, there were many families who had sons who were unemployed. The CCC was the perfect answer and many young men answered the call. At the time, we were on the cusp of WWII, and the CCC ultimately provided many very qualified young men who were well prepared for the rigors of military life.

1940: THE CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS (AKA "CCC"

We were still experiencing the aftermath of the Great Depression back there in 1940, and President Roosevelt's administration believed that a structured, military style organization would be an ideal place for young American boys. As a boy of 7, I remember that my buddy Don Slabicki's brother Karl joined that group back in the late 1930's or early 40's.
If there are any visitors who were in the CCC or have relatives who were, it would be appreciated if you would add your experiences to this post for the benefit of future generations.

1941: CCC Boys off to Duty

The "CCC Civilian Conservation Corps" folder in the library is admittedly quite sparse, but I do have a few articles and photos, and I am sure more will turn up as I delve deeper into the newspapers from the FDR era of the late 1930's.

2008: REGARDING A RECENT CCC POST

HERE'S A GUEST BOOK ENTRY FROM ROB ROMAN REQUESTING ANY INFORMATION ON THE "TRENTON PHANTOMS" SOCCER CLUB. I WILL KEEP AN EYE OUT ON THE SPORTS PAGES, ROB. PERHAPS A VISITOR MIGHT HAVE SOME INFO. I JUST RECENTLY RECEIVED AND POSTED A PHOTO OF THE WHITE HORSE SOCCER TEAM.

I have written a couple of times and you have posted some items that I share with my 88 year old grandmother. The Bayer Factory was awesome. I see recently you posted a picture of guys joining the CCC. I think one of the guys in the photo looks like my Grandfathers brother. The depression hit my family hard. Both my grandfather and his brother were in the CCC.
I was wondering if you have any information about any soccer clubs. My grandfather loved the game. I guess he played sometime in the early 30's. I believe the team he played for was called the Trenton Phantoms. My grandmother mentions Hetzel field is where they played
I am sure information is for these teams/leagues is not to common. I figure at that time in history the Polish Community didn't garner a lot of coverage.. Any info you could provide would be a great spirit booster for my grandmother. She recently fell and broke her hip. She sure could use a pick me up. THIS SUBJECT ALWAYS INTRIGUES ME. I REMEMBER AS A SMALL BOY OF 10 IN 1939, WHEN MY BUDDY DON SLABICKI'S BROTHER KARL JOINED THE CCC. IT WAS A VALUABLE GOVERNMENT SERVICE, AND AT THE SAME TIME HELPED MANY A FAMILY THROUGH THE GREAT DEPRESSION.
